Once, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted in the court of the Messenger: O Messenger of Allah! Your uncle Abu Talib used to defend you a lot, what benefit did he receive because of you? He replied: "He is in the upper part of Hell; if it were not for me, he would have been in the lowest level of Hell."

Once, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I am your uncle, I have become old and my time of death is near. Teach me a supplication through which Allah may grant me benefit." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abbas! You are indeed my uncle, but I cannot be of any help to you in the matter of Allah. However, you should keep asking your Lord for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times. Then, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came again after a year, and even then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him the same supplication.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the valley of Batha when a cloud passed by. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know what this is?" We said: It is called sahab (cloud). He said: "Is it also called muzn?" We said: Yes, it is also called muzn. Then he said: "Is it also called 'anan?" At this, we remained silent. Then he said: "Do you know what the distance is between the sky and the earth?" We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: "The distance between the sky and the earth is five hundred years, and likewise, the distance between each heaven and the next is five hundred years, and the thickness of each heaven is five hundred years. Then above the seventh heaven is a sea, the surface and depth of which is the distance between the earth and the sky. Then above that are eight mountain goats, the distance between their knees and hooves is as much as the distance between the earth and the sky. Then above that is the Throne ('Arsh), the distance between its upper and lower parts is as much as the distance between the earth and the sky. And above all is Allah, Blessed and Exalted, from whom no deed of the children of Adam is hidden."

Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: At the time of the Battle of Hunayn, I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). At that time, besides me and Abu Sufyan bin Harith, there was no one with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Both of us remained clinging to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and did not separate from him in any way. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was mounted on his white mule, which had been gifted to him by Farwah bin Naa’mah al-Judhami. When the Muslims and the disbelievers came face to face, initially the Muslims turned their backs and fled, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeatedly spurred his mule forward towards the disbelievers. I was holding the reins of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mule and was trying to restrain it from advancing, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not negligent in advancing swiftly towards the polytheists. Abu Sufyan bin Harith was holding the stirrup of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mount. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), seeing the state of the battle, said: “Abbas! Call out to the Muslims by saying, ‘O companions of the Samurah!’” My voice was naturally loud, so I called out in a loud voice: “Where are the companions of the Samurah?” By Allah! As soon as they heard this voice, the Muslims returned just as a cow returns to her calf, and they advanced saying “Labbayk!” and fell upon the disbelievers. Meanwhile, the Ansar were calling their companions, saying: “O group of Ansar!” Then the callers called out only the name of Banu Harith bin Khazraj and summoned them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed this situation while mounted on his mule, and it seemed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself wished to advance and participate in the fighting, he said: “Now the real battle has begun.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) picked up a handful of pebbles and threw them at the faces of the disbelievers, saying: “By the Lord of the Ka’bah! They have been defeated. By the Lord of the Ka’bah! They have been defeated.” I moved forward to observe, thinking that the battle was still ongoing as before, but by Allah! As soon as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw the pebbles at them, I felt that their vigor was turning into weakness, and their state was close to turning their backs and fleeing. And so it happened, and Allah caused them to be defeated. And it seems to me as if I can still see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted on his mule, spurring it forward towards them.

Abdul Muttalib bin Rabee’ah says that once Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) presented himself in the court of the Messenger and said: O Messenger of Allah! We go out and see that the people of Quraysh are talking among themselves, but when they see us, they become silent. At this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and the vein between his two eyes swelled. Then he said: “By Allah! Faith cannot enter a person’s heart until he loves you for the sake of Allah’s pleasure and because of my kinship.”

Malik bin Aws bin Hadthan says that once Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for me with a message. While we were sitting, Sayyiduna Umar’s slave—whose name was Yarfa—came in and said, “Sayyiduna Uthman, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman, Sayyiduna Sa’d, and Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with them all) are seeking permission to enter.” He said, “Let them in.” After a short while, the slave came again and said, “Sayyiduna Abbas and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) are seeking permission to enter.” He said, “Let them in as well.” As soon as Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) entered, he said, “O Leader of the Believers! Decide between me and him.” At that time, their dispute was about the wealth of Fay’ obtained from Banu Nadir. The people also said, “O Leader of the Believers! Decide between them and grant each relief from the other.” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I ask you by Allah, by whose command the heavens and the earth are established, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Inheritance is not established in our wealth; whatever we leave behind is all charity’?” The people replied in the affirmative. Then he asked the same question to Sayyiduna Abbas and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), and they also affirmed it. After that, he said, “I will inform you of its reality. Allah gave this wealth of Fay’ exclusively to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); no one else was given anything from it, and He said: «﴿وَمَا أَفَاءَ اللّٰهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ مِنْهُمْ فَمَا أَوْجَفْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ خَيْلٍ وَلَا رِكَابٍ﴾ [الحشر : 6]» ‘And whatever (wealth) Allah has bestowed upon His Messenger from them (without battle), you did not spur for it any horses or camels.’ Therefore, this wealth was specific to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but by Allah! He did not keep it for himself to the exclusion of you, nor did he prefer himself over you with this wealth. He distributed this wealth among you until only a little remained, from which he would provide for his family for a year, and if anything was left from that, he would distribute it in the way of Allah. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said that after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I am responsible and guardian of his wealth. Thus, he followed the same method as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to follow regarding it.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and all the pure wives were present there. All of them observed veiling from me except Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) (because Sayyidah Maymunah was his sister-in-law). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever was present at the time when medicine was forcibly put into my mouth, medicine should also be forcibly put into his mouth, but my oath does not apply to Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then he said, "Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) to request the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stands in your place, he will start weeping (and will not be able to control himself). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said, "Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." So he stood up and led the prayer. Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also felt some relief in his illness, and he also came for the prayer. At this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to step back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and sat beside him and recited (the Qur'an).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that during his final illness, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." So he stood up and led the prayer. Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) felt some relief in his illness, and he also came for prayer supported by two men. At this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to step back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) signaled to him, "Stay in your place." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Look, do you see any star in the sky?" I said: Yes! He said: "Which star do you see?" I replied: Thurayya (the Pleiades). Afif Kindi says that I was a merchant, and once I came for Hajj. I came to buy some merchandise from Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who himself was also a merchant. I was with him in Mina when suddenly a man came out from a nearby tent. When he saw the sun declining, he stood up to pray. Then a woman came out from the same tent from which the man had come out, and she began to pray standing behind the man. Then a boy—who was near the age of puberty—also came out from the same tent and began to pray standing with the man. I asked Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), "Abbas! Who is this?" He said, "This is my nephew, Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul Muttalib." I asked, "Who is this woman?" He said, "This is his wife, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid." I asked, "Who is this young man?" He said, "This is his uncle's son, Ali bin Abi Talib." I asked, "What are they doing?" He said, "They are praying. They believe that he is Allah's Prophet, but so far only his wife and this young man have started following him. And they also believe that soon the treasures of Caesar and Chosroes will be opened for them." Afif—who later accepted Islam—says, "If Allah had granted me the ability to accept Islam that very day, I would have been the third Muslim."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once some things from the people reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he ascended the pulpit and addressed the people, asking: "Who am I?" The people said, "You are the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am Muhammad, son of Abdullah, son of Abdul Muttalib. Allah created the creatures and placed me among the best of them. Then Allah divided them into two groups and placed me in the best group. Then Allah created tribes and placed me in the best tribe. Then Allah determined dwellings and placed me in the best dwelling. Therefore, in terms of dwelling I am the best among you, and in terms of my own self I am the best among you."

It is narrated from Ubaidullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) had a water spout which came onto the path of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Once, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wore new clothes on Friday, and on the same day, two chicks were slaughtered at the house of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reached near that water spout, water mixed with the blood of the chicks started flowing from it. That water fell on Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and it contained the blood of the chicks. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that the water spout be removed from there. He went back home, took off those clothes, wore other clothes, and came back to lead the people in prayer. After the prayer, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and said, "By Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had placed this water spout at this spot." Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I ask you by oath to stand on my back and put it back where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had placed it." So Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reinstalled the water spout in the same way.
