Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him)—who was the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him)—narrates: Once I presented some dates to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). People began to take and eat two or three dates at a time. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do not eat by combining them in this way (rather, eat one at a time).”

Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was very pleased with his service. Therefore, on one occasion, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was told: “Abu Bakr! Free Sa’d.” He submitted: “O Messenger of Allah! We have no one else to do the household work.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Free Sa’d, soon captives will come to you.”
