It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed: «ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِنْدَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ» [الزمر : 31] "Then on the Day of Resurrection you will dispute before your Lord," he asked: O Messenger of Allah! Is the disputing meant here the disputing with opponents in this world? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." Then when this verse was revealed: «ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ» [التكاثر : 8] "On that Day you will surely be questioned about the blessings," Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Messenger of Allah! About which blessings will we be questioned? When all we have is dates and water. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware! The time of blessings is also soon to come."
Hadith 1406
Once, Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf, Sayyiduna Talha, Sayyiduna Zubair, and Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with them): I ask you by Allah and by the One by whose command the heavens and the earth are established, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Inheritance is not established in our wealth; whatever we leave behind is all charity”? They replied in the affirmative.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is better for a person to pick up his rope, gather firewood with it, bring it to the market, place it there, and sell it, thereby attaining self-sufficiency and spending on himself, than to go around asking people, whether they give him or not."
Hadith 1408
Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) combined his parents for me. (That is, he said to me: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you.")

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that on the day of the Battle of the Trench, I and Umar bin Abi Salamah were on a mound called Atm Hassaan, in which the pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were present. Sometimes he would lift me up high, and sometimes I would lift him up high. When he lifted me up high, I used to recognize my father when he passed by Banu Qurayzah. He was participating in jihad with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the occasion of the Battle of the Trench, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying, "Who will go to Banu Qurayzah and fight them?" On his return, I said to my father, "Dear father! By Allah! I recognized you at that time when you were going towards Banu Qurayzah." He replied, "Son! On that occasion, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered his parents for me and said, 'May my mother and father be sacrificed for you.'"
Hadith 1410
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) that he once mounted a man on a horse in the way of Allah, meaning he made him its owner. The horse's name was Ghamrah or Ghamra’. After some time, that same horse or one of its offspring was found being sold. Since it was attributed to the same horse which he had given in charity, he was forbidden from buying it again.

Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we used to perform the Friday prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and after returning, we would begin scattering seeds in the sand dunes. At that time, we would find no shade except for the place of our own feet.
Hadith 1412
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The diseases of the previous nations, that is, envy and hatred, have also crept into you, and hatred is something that shaves—it does not shave hair, but it shaves the religion. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! You cannot become complete believers until you love one another. Shall I not tell you a way, which if you adopt, you will begin to love one another? Spread the greeting of peace among yourselves."
Hadith 1413
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that I asked my father, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), "Why is it that, unlike Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and other companions whom I hear narrating hadith, I do not hear you narrating?" He replied, "Since I accepted Islam, I have never been separated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever deliberately attributes a lie to me, let him take his seat in the Hellfire.' (That is why I am afraid)."

Mutarrif says that once we said to Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), "O Abu Abdullah! For what purpose have you people come? You people lost a caliph until he was martyred, and now you are demanding retribution for him?" Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq, and Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with them), we used to recite this verse of the Qur'an: «﴿وَاتَّقُوا فِتْنَةً لَا تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْكُمْ خَاصَّةً﴾ [الأنفال : 25]» 'And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively (but will affect everyone),' but we did not think that it would apply to us, until this trial befell us."
Hadith 1415
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You may change the whiteness of your hair, but avoid imitating the Jews even in this matter."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were coming from a place called Laylah with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When we reached near a berry tree, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on one side of a mountain called Qarn Aswad, facing it, and looked towards the valley of Nakhb and stood there for a while. All the people also stopped there. After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The game of Wajj—which is the name of a valley in Ta’if—and every thorny tree is included in the Haram, and to hunt or cut it is forbidden in obedience to Allah’s command." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this before reaching Ta’if and besieging Banu Thaqif.
Hadith 1417
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say on the day when Sayyiduna Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) served the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the way that he did—that is, he sat down bending in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mounted his back—“Talha has made Paradise obligatory for himself.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that at the end of the Battle of Uhud, a woman was seen coming quickly from the front. She was about to see the bodies of the martyrs, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not like that the woman should see them, so he said, "Stop this woman, stop this woman." Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I realized that this was my mother, Sayyida Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), so I ran towards her and reached her before she could get to the bodies of the martyrs. When she saw me, she struck me on the chest with both hands and pushed me back. She was a strong woman and said, "Move aside, I am not talking to you." I said, "The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has made you swear not to look at these bodies." As soon as she heard this, she stopped and took out two pieces of cloth she had with her and said, "These are two cloths I have brought for my brother Hamza, for I have already received news of his martyrdom. Shroud him in these cloths." When we began to shroud Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) in those two cloths, we saw that next to him lay an Ansari who had been treated in the same way as Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him). We felt ashamed to shroud Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) in two cloths while the Ansari did not even have one. Therefore, we decided to shroud Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) in one cloth and the Ansari companion (may Allah be pleased with him) in the other. Upon estimation, we found that one of the two was taller, so we drew lots, and whichever name came up for each cloth, we shrouded him in that cloth.

Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) used to narrate that once he had a dispute with an Ansari companion (may Allah be pleased with him)—who was among the participants of the Battle of Badr—regarding the water channel from which both of them irrigated their respective fields, in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ended the matter by saying: "Zubair! Water your field first, then leave the water for your neighbor." The Ansari was displeased at this and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Is it because he is your cousin that you are giving this decision?" At this, the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed color, and he said to Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him): "Now water your field and withhold the water until it reaches the embankment." Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) his full right, whereas previously the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had advised Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) in a way that allowed room and leniency for both him and the Ansari. But when the Ansari expressed his reservations before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave a clear ruling and granted Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) his full right. Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah! I believe that the following verse was revealed regarding this incident: «﴿فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ حَتَّى يُحَكِّمُوكَ فِيمَا شَجَرَ بَيْنَهُمْ ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُوا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ حَرَجًا مِمَّا قَضَيْتَ وَيُسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا﴾ [النساء : 65]» "But no, by your Lord, they will not (truly) believe until they make you (O Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, then find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept them with full submission."
Hadith 1420
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The cities belong to Allah and the servants belong to Allah, so wherever you see goodness, settle there."
Hadith 1421
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting this verse in the plain of Arafat: «﴿شَهِدَ اللّٰهُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ وَأُولُو الْعِلْمِ قَائِمًا بِالْقِسْطِ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ﴾ [آل عمران : 18]» "Allah bears witness that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge, maintaining [His creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying, "O Lord! I also bear witness to this."

Umm ‘Ata and others say: By Allah! It feels as if we can still see Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), when he came to us riding on his white mule and said: O Umm ‘Ata! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the Muslims from eating the meat of their sacrificial animals for more than three days. I said: May my father be sacrificed for you, if sacrificial meat comes to us as a gift from somewhere, what should we do with it? He replied: Whatever comes to you as a gift, you have discretion regarding it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that on the day of the Battle of the Trench, I and Umar bin Abi Salamah were on the hill called Atm Hassaan, in which the pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were present. (Sometimes he would lift me up high and sometimes I would lift him up high. When he would lift me up high,) I used to recognize my father when he passed by Banu Qurayza. On his return, I said to my father, “Dear father! By Allah! I recognized you at that time when you were walking around.” He said, “Son! Did you really see me?” I said, “Yes!” He said, “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: ‘Who will go to Banu Qurayza and bring me their news?’ I went, and when I returned, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at that moment gathered his parents for me and said: ‘May my mother and father be sacrificed for you.’”
Hadith 1424
Sufyan bin Wahb Khawlani (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when we conquered the land of Egypt by the sword, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him)—who was the conqueror of Egypt and the commander of the Muslim army—"O Amr bin Al-Aas! Distribute it." He replied, "I will not distribute it yet." Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) swore an oath and said, "You will have to distribute it just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed Khaybar." He said, "I cannot distribute it before corresponding with the Commander of the Faithful." So they wrote a letter of this nature to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and the reply came from there: "Keep it as it is (leave it as it is) until the next generation participates in the battle."
Hadith 1425
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), after returning from a battle, gave him a share from the spoils of war. He also gave a share to his mother, and allotted two shares for the horse (i.e., every horseman was given two shares, and every foot soldier was given one share).

Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, says that a man came to Sayyiduna Zubair, may Allah be pleased with him, and said, "Shall I finish off Ali?" He replied, "Absolutely not! And besides, he has such a large army with him that you cannot kill him anyway." The man said, "Then will you go to him and dispute with him regarding the matter of the caliphate?" He replied, "That too is not possible because the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Faith has shackled the feet of dispute, therefore a believer is not quarrelsome.'"

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that I asked my father, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), "Why do you not narrate the hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied, "Since I accepted Islam, I have never been separated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever deliberately attributes a false statement to me, he should make his abode in the Hellfire.'" (That is why I am afraid.)

Hadith 1434
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed: «إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُمْ مَيِّتُونَ ٭ ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِنْدَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ» [الزمر : 30-31] "Indeed, you will die and indeed, they (too) will die. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will dispute before your Lord." He asked: O Messenger of Allah! Does it mean disputing with people in this world along with sins? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, this dispute will happen again until the rightful person is given his due." Upon this, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! This is a very severe matter.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that the mention in the Noble Qur'an of the jinn listening to the Holy Qur'an is related to the valley of Nakhlah, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was offering the Isha prayer. And while explaining the Qur'anic verse: «﴿كَادُوا يَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَدًا﴾ [الجن : 19]», Sufyan says that they were coming upon each other in heaps (that is, when the polytheists saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) engaged in worship, they would crowd together in such a way that it seemed as if they were about to attack, and it felt like an attack could happen at any moment).
Hadith 1436
Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we used to perform the Friday prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), (and after returning, we would scatter seeds in the sand dunes), and at that time, we would find no shade except for the place of our own feet.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) or Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would advise us and warn us of Allah’s punishment, its effects would be visible on his blessed face, and it would seem as if he was warning a people whose matter would be decided in the morning. And when there had been a recent meeting with Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not laugh until the effects of the state of revelation had passed.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed, there was a good number of us with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): «﴿وَاتَّقُوا فِتْنَةً لَا تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْكُمْ خَاصَّةً﴾ [الأنفال : 25]» "Beware of a trial which will not only afflict those among you who have done wrong (but will be general)." So we began to ask, "What will this trial be?" But we did not think that it would apply to us, until that trial befell us.
