حَدِيثُ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةِ اسْمُهَا نُسَيْبَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا
Hadith of Umm Atiyyah al-Ansariyyah, her name is Nusaybah (may Allah be pleased with her)
Hadith 27297
حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ , عَنْ أَيُّوبَ , عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ , عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّة : خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ نُغَسِّلُ ابْنَتَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا ، أَوْ خَمْسًا ، أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ ، وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا ، أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ ، فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ ، فَآذِنَّنِي " , فَآذَنَّاهُ , فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ , فَقَالَ : " أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ " , قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ : وَحَدَّثَتْنَاهُ حَفْصَةُ , قَالَتْ : فَجَعَلْنَا رَأْسَهَا ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُونٍ.
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that we were washing the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Hazrat Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and said: "Wash her three times or more (in odd numbers), and if you think appropriate, mix lote tree leaves in the water, and at the end, apply camphor to her. When you have finished with these things, inform me." So when we finished, we informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he threw his lower garment towards us and said: "Wrap her body in this first." The narrator of the hadith, Muhammad, says that Hafsah bint Sirin also narrated this hadith to us, but she said that we divided her hair into three parts.
Hadith 27298
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ ، قَالَتْ : لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ : عَلَى أَنْ لا يُشْرِكْنَ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا إِلَى قَوْلِهِ وَلا يَعْصِينَكَ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ سورة الممتحنة آية 12 ، قَالَتْ : كَانَ فِيهِ النِّيَاحَةُ ، قَالَتْ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ , إِلَّا آلَ فُلَانٍ , فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ كَانُوا أَسْعَدُونِي فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ , فَلَا بُدَّ لِي مِنْ أَنْ أُسْعِدَهُمْ , فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِلَّا آلَ فُلَانٍ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when this verse was revealed: «عَلَى أَنْ لا يُشْرِكْنَ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا . . .», wailing was also included in it. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Exempt the people of such-and-such family, because they helped me in wailing during the days of ignorance, so it is necessary for me to help them as well. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) exempted them.
Hadith 27299
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْأَزْرَقُ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ , عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ , قَالَتْ : تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , فَقَالَ : " اغْسِلْنَهَا بِسِدْرٍ , وَاغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا , أَوْ خَمْسًا , أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ , وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا , أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ , فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ , فَآذِنَّنِي " , قَالَتْ : فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا , آذَنَّاهُ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاة وَالسَّلَامُ , فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ , فَقَالَ : " أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Hazrat Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), passed away, the Prophet came to us and said: "Wash her three times or more (in odd numbers), and apply camphor at the end, and when you have finished with these things, inform me." Hadith 27300
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ , عَنْ حَفْصَةَ , عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ , قَالَتْ : " غَزَوْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَبْعَ غَزَوَاتٍ , أُدَاوِي الْمَرْضَى وَأَقُومُ عَلَى جِرَاحَاتِهِمْ , فَأَخْلُفُهُمْ فِي رِحَالِهِمْ , أَصْنَعُ لَهُمْ الطَّعَامَ " .
Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that I participated in seven battles along with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I used to stay in the tents and prepare food for the warriors, take care of the sick, and treat the wounded.
Hadith 27301
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ , عَنْ خَالِدٍ , عَنْ حَفْصَةَ , عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ , قَالَتْ : بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِشَاةٍ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ , فَبَعَثْتُ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْهَا , فَلَمَّا جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ , قَالَ : " هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ؟ " , قَالَتْ : لَا , إِلَّا أَنَّ نُسَيْبَةَ بَعَثَتْ إِلَيْنَا مِنَ الشَّاةِ الَّتِي بَعَثْتُمْ بِهَا إِلَيْهَا , فَقَالَ : " إِنَّهَا قَدْ بَلَغَتْ مَحِلَّهَا " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent some meat from a goat given in charity to my house. I sent a little of it to Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), he asked her: "Do you have anything?" She replied: "No, but Naseebah has sent us a portion of the same goat which you had sent to her." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has reached its place."
Hadith 27302
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ , أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , قَالَ لَهُمْ فِي غُسْلِ ابْنَتِهِ : " ابْدَأْنَ بِمَيَامِنِهَا ، وَمَوَاضِعِ الْوُضُوءِ مِنْهَا " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that on the occasion of giving ghusl to his daughter, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed her to begin washing from the right side and from the parts of the body that are washed in wudu.
Hadith 27303
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ , عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَتْ : " نُهِيَ عَنِ اتِّبَاعِ الْجَنَائِزِ ، وَلَمْ يُعْزَمْ عَلَيْنَا " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that we were forbidden from accompanying funeral processions, but this prohibition was not enforced strictly upon us.
Hadith 27304
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، قالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ , عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ , عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ , قَالَتْ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا يُحِدُّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا الْمَرْأَةُ ، فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا ، لَا تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا ثَوْبَ عَصْبٍ ، وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ ، وَلَا تَطَّيَّبُ ، إِلَّا عِنْدَ أَدْنَى طُهْرَتِهَا نُبْذَةً مِنْ قُسْطٍ وَأَظْفَارٍ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No woman should observe mourning for any deceased person for more than three days except for her husband, for whom she should mourn for four months and ten days. She should not wear clothes dyed with any color except 'asab, nor apply kohl, nor use perfume, except when she becomes pure after her menstrual period, then she may use a little qust or azfar perfume.
Hadith 27305
حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ , قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ , عَنْ حَفْصَةَ , عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ , قَالَتْ : " كَانَ تَعْنِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخَذَ عَلَيْنَا فِي الْبَيْعَةِ أَنْ لَا نَنُوحَ " , فَمَا وَفَتْ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَّا غَيْرَ خَمْسٍ : أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ , وَامْرَأَةُ مُعَاذٍ َابْنَةُ أَبِي سَبْرَةَ , وأم العلاء وَامْرَأَةٌ أُخْرَى .
Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that among the conditions which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set when taking our pledge of allegiance was that you will not wail (lament), but except for five women, none of us fulfilled this promise.
Hadith 27306
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ , وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ , قَالَا : أَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ ، قَالَتْ : حَدَّثَتْنِي أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ ، قَالَتْ : تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " اغْسِلْنَهَا بِسِدْرٍ ، وَاغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا : ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا , أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ , وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا , أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ , فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ , فَآذِنَّنِي " , قَالَتْ : فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ ، فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ " ، قَالَتْ أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ : وَضَفَرْنَا رَأْسَ ابْنَةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُونٍ , وَأَلْقَيْنَا خَلْفَهَا قَرْنَيْهَا وَنَاصِيَتَهَا.
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Hazrat Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and said: "Wash her with water of lote tree leaves three times or more (in odd numbers), and in the end, apply camphor to her. And when you have finished with these things, inform me." So when we finished, we informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw his lower garment towards us and said: "Wrap her body in this first." Umm Atiyyah says that we made her hair into three braids and placed the two sides and the front hair behind.
Hadith 27307
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ , قَالَتْ : بَايَعْنَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , " وَأَخَذَ عَلَيْنَا فِيمَا أَخَذَ , أَنْ لَا نَنُوحَ " , فَقَالَتْ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ : إِنَّ آلَ فُلَانٍ أَسْعَدُونِي فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ , وَفِيهِمْ مَأْتَمٌ , فَلَا أُبَايِعُكَ حَتَّى أُسْعِدَهُمْ كَمَا أَسْعَدُونِي ، فَقَالَ : فَكأنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَافَقَهَا عَلَى ذَلِكَ ، فَذَهَبَتْ فَأَسْعَدَتْهُمْ , ثُمَّ رَجَعَتْ , فَبَايَعَتْ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , قَالَ : فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ : فَمَا وَفَتْ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَّا غَيْرُ تِلْكَ , وَغَيْرُ أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ بِنْتِ مِلْحَانَ.
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when this verse was revealed: «عَلَى أَنْ لا يُشْرِكْنَ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا . . .», wailing was also included in it. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Exempt the people of such-and-such family, because they helped me in wailing during the time of ignorance, so it is necessary for me to help them as well. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) exempted them. She went, offered condolences to them, and after returning, pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She says that after that, no one fulfilled this promise except her and Umm Sulaym bint Milhan.
Hadith 27308
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ , قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ , وحَبِيبٌ , عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ , أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَخَذَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ فِيمَا أَخَذَ أَنْ لَا يَنُحْنَ " , فَقَالَتْ امْرَأَةٌ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ , إِنَّ امْرَأَةً أَسْعَدَتْنِي , أَفَلَا أُسْعِدُهَا ؟ فَقَبَضَتْ يَدَهَا , وَقَبَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَهُ , فَلَمْ يُبَايِعْهَا .
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when this verse was revealed: «عَلَى أَنْ لا يُشْرِكْنَ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا», wailing was also included in it. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Exempt the women of such-and-such family, because they helped me in wailing during the days of ignorance, so it is necessary for me to help them as well. Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) withdrew his hand and did not take the pledge from them at that time.
Hadith 27309
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ أَبُو يَعْقُوبَ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَطِيَّة , عَنْ جَدَّتِهِ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ , قَالَتْ : " لَمَّا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ ، جَمَعَ نِسَاءَ الْأَنْصَارِ فِي بَيْتٍ , ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ , فَقَامَ عَلَى الْبَابِ , فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِنَّ , فَرَدَدْنَ السَّلَامَ , فَقَالَ : أَنَا رَسُولُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيْكُنَّ , فَقُلْنَ : مَرْحَبًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَسُولِهِ , فَقَالَ : تُبَايِعْنَ عَلَى أَنْ لَا تُشْرِكْنَ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا , وَلَا تَسْرِقْنَ , وَلَا تَزْنِينَ , وَلَا تَقْتُلْنَ أَوْلَادَكُنَّ , وَلَا تَأْتِينَ بِبُهْتَانٍ تَفْتَرِينَهُ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُنَّ وَأَرْجُلِكُنَّ , وَلَا تَعْصِينَ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ ؟ فَقُلْنَ : نَعَمْ , فَمَدَّ عُمَرُ يَدَهُ مِنْ خَارِجِ الْبَابِ , وَمَدَدْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنَّ مِنْ دَاخِلٍ , ثُمَّ قَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ , وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نُخْرِجَ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ الْعُتَّقَ وَالْحُيَّضَ , وَنُهِينَا عَنِ اتِّبَاعِ الْجَنَائِزِ , وَلَا جُمُعَةَ عَلَيْنَا , فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْبُهْتَانِ , وَعَنْ قَوْلِهِ : وَلا يَعْصِينَكَ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ سورة الممتحنة آية 12 , قَالَ : هِيَ النِّيَاحَةُ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, he gathered the women of the Ansar in a house, then sent Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to them. He came and stood at the door and greeted them with salam. The women replied. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have come to you as the messenger of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We said: Welcome to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his messenger. He said: Do you pledge that you will not associate anything with Allah, will not commit adultery, will not kill your children, will not fabricate any slander, and will not disobey the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in any good work? We agreed and extended our hands from inside the house. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) extended his hand from outside and said: O Allah! Be witness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also commanded us that on the two Eids, we should take the unmarried and menstruating women out for the prayer, and he forbade us from accompanying funeral processions, and that Jumu'ah is not obligatory upon us. A woman asked Hazrat Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) about the meaning of «وَلا يَعْصِينَكَ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ», so she replied that in it we were forbidden from wailing.
