It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Shurayh Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should treat his neighbor well, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Shurayh Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah declared Makkah a sanctuary on the day He created the heavens and the earth; people did not declare it a sanctuary. Therefore, it will remain a sanctuary until the Day of Resurrection. It is not permissible for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood therein or to cut its trees. And if anyone says to you that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also fought in Makkah, then say: Allah made it lawful for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), not for you. O group of Khuza'ah! For the person whom you killed before this, I will pay his blood money, but after my standing in this place, if anyone kills someone, then the heirs of the slain will have the choice of one of two things: either to take retribution from the killer or to accept blood money."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Shurayh Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should treat his neighbor well, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest with what is due. The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by "what is due"? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hospitality is for three days, and 'what is due' (special hospitality) is for one day and night. Whatever is beyond that is charity. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent. And it is not permissible for a person to stay with someone so long that he makes him sinful."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this statement three times, swearing an oath each time: "That person cannot be a believer." The companions asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Who?" He replied: "The one whose neighbors are not safe from his «بوائق»." The companions asked the meaning of «بوائق», so he said: "Evil."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Amr bin Saeed intended to send his army towards Makkah Mukarramah to confront Hazrat Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), he went to him, spoke to him, and conveyed to him the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then he came and sat in the gathering of his people, and I also went and sat with him. He narrated the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and then described the reply of Amr bin Saeed, saying: I said to him, O so-and-so! On the occasion of the conquest of Makkah, we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The day after the conquest of Makkah, the Banu Khuza’ah attacked a man from Banu Hudhail and killed him; the slain was a polytheist. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood among us to deliver a sermon and said: “O people! Allah declared Makkah a sanctuary on the day He created the heavens and the earth, so it will remain a sanctuary until the Day of Resurrection. It is not permissible for any person who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood therein or to cut down its trees. It was not lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be lawful for anyone after me, and it was made lawful for me only for a short period because of Allah’s wrath upon its people. Beware! Its sanctity has now returned as it was yesterday. Beware! Let those who are present convey this to those who are absent. And if anyone among you says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also fought in Makkah, then say: Allah made it lawful for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), not for you. O group of Khuza’ah! Now withhold your hands from killing, for it is enough. As for the one whom you have killed before this, I will pay his blood money. But after my standing in this place, whoever kills anyone, the heirs of the slain will have the choice of two things: either to take retribution from the killer or to accept blood money.” After this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) paid the blood money for the man whom Banu Khuza’ah had killed. Upon hearing this hadith, Amr bin Saeed said to Hazrat Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him): Old man, go back; we know its sanctity better than you. This sanctity cannot protect a blood-shedder, one who abandons obedience, or one who withholds jizyah. I said to him: I was present at that time, you were absent, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded us to convey it to the absent, so I have conveyed this command to you. Now it is up to you and your actions.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hospitality is for three days, and the right (of elaborate hospitality) is only for one day and night. Whatever is beyond that is charity upon the host. And it is not permissible for a person to stay with someone so long that he makes him sinful." The companions asked: "O Messenger of Allah! What does making him sinful mean?" He replied: "That he stays with the host while the host has nothing left to offer him to eat."
