Musnad Ahmad

Al-Aswad ibn ‘Amir narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn Zayd, from al-Hasan, that al-Dahhak ibn Qays wrote to Qays ibn al-Haytham when Yazid ibn Mu‘awiyah died: Peace be upon you. To proceed: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "Indeed, before the Hour there will be tribulations like pieces of a dark night, and tribulations like pieces of smoke; in them the heart of a man will die as his body dies. A man will wake up as a believer and reach the evening as a disbeliever, and reach the evening as a believer and wake up as a disbeliever. In them, people will sell their share and their religion for a small portion of this world." And indeed, Yazid ibn Mu‘awiyah has died, and you are our brothers and our kin, so do not precede us in anything until we choose for ourselves.
