Amr bin Qurrah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) used to live in the city of Mada'in and would mention some things that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. One day Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him). Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "Hudhaifa! The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sometimes spoke certain things in anger and sometimes in happiness. I know that once the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said while delivering a sermon: 'If I have ever spoken harshly to any of my followers in anger or cursed or reproached him, then I am also from among the children of Adam, and just as ordinary people get angry, I also get angry. And Allah has made me a mercy to the worlds. O Allah! Make these words of mine a source of mercy for that person on the Day of Resurrection.'"

Abu Uthman says that once I was with Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) under a tree. He took hold of a dry branch of it and shook it, so its leaves began to fall. Then he said, "O Abu Uthman! Why do you not ask me why I did this?" I said, "Why did you do this?" He said, "Once I was with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) under a tree, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did the same with me, and the same question and answer took place. After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that when a Muslim performs ablution well and offers the five prayers, his sins fall away just as these leaves are falling." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: 'And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.'

When the final moments of Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) approached, he began to weep and said that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken a covenant from us and left us upon that covenant: that in this world, the most possessions we should have should be no more than the provisions of a traveler. The narrator says that after the passing of Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him), when we examined his estate, the total value of all his belongings was only a little over twenty or thirty dirhams.

It is narrated from Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were from the children of the chiefs of Persia... Then, while mentioning the entire hadith (which is about to come at 24138), he said: I kept traveling through the ups and downs of the land until I passed by a tribe of villagers, so they made me a slave and sold me, and a woman bought me. I heard those people mentioning the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), but by that time life had become bitter. I said to my mistress, "Give me a day off." She gave me a day off. I set out from there, cut some wood, sold it, prepared food, and brought it to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and presented it before him. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "What is this?" I replied, "This is charity." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his companions, "You all eat it," but the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not eat from it. I thought to myself that this is a sign (which has been fulfilled). After some time, once again, I asked my mistress for a day off, which she gave me. As before, I cut wood, sold it, prepared food, and brought it to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting among his companions. I placed the food before the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "What is this?" I replied, "This is a gift." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) extended his hand and also said to the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), "Eat, in the name of Allah." Then I went and stood behind the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) lifted his cloak, and there the Seal of Prophethood became visible. As soon as I saw it, I said, "I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "What is the matter?" I told the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about that man and asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Will that man enter Paradise, because he was the one who told me that you are the Prophet of Allah?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Only that person will enter Paradise who is a Muslim." I repeated my question, and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave the same answer again.

It is narrated from Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) that once some polytheists mocked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying, "We see that your Prophet even teaches you the manner of relieving yourselves." Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Yes! He commands us that we should not face the Qiblah at that time, should not clean ourselves with the right hand, and should not suffice with less than three stones, nor with dung or bone."

It is narrated from Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty has created one hundred mercies, of which one mercy is such that through it the creation shows mercy to one another, and even wild animals show compassion to their offspring, and ninety-nine mercies have been reserved for the Day of Resurrection.

Amr bin Abi Qurrah Kindi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that his father proposed marriage to the sister of Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) in his presence, but he refused and instead married his freed slave woman, whose name was Baqirah. Then Abu Qurrah found out that there was some estrangement between Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him), so he went searching for them and learned that they were near their vegetables. Abu Qurrah set out in that direction and on the way met Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him), who had a basket filled with vegetables with him. He had inserted his stick into the rope of the basket and placed it on his shoulder. I said to him, "O Abu Abdullah! Is there any estrangement between you and Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him)?" Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "Man is ever hasty," and they both continued walking until they reached the house of Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him). Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) went inside the house and greeted (with salam), then allowed Abu Qurrah to enter. There, near the door, a sheet was spread, some bricks were placed at the head, and two earrings were lying there. Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Sit on the bed of my slave woman who has prepared herself." He began the conversation and said, "Hudhaifah narrates many things which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would say to some people in a state of anger. People ask me about it, so I tell them that Hudhaifah knows better what he says. I do not like to increase hatred among people. People go to Hudhaifah and say that Salman neither confirms nor denies you. So once Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me and said, 'O son of Umm Salman, Salman! I have also said, O son of Umm Hudhaifah, Hudhaifah! You should desist, otherwise I will write a letter to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).' When I made him fear Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he left me alone. Although the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has said, 'I am also from the children of Adam, so if I have cursed or reproached any believing servant or said something harsh about him, then O Allah! Make it a source of mercy for him.'"
Hadith 23722
It is narrated from Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) that during my period of slavery, once I brought food to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "This is charity." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed his companions, and they ate it, but the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not eat it himself. On another occasion, I brought food again and said, "This is a gift which I have brought for you out of respect for you, because I have seen that you do not eat charity." So the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed his companions, and they ate it, and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also ate it with them.
Hadith 23723
It is narrated from Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) that in this regard, I used to seek permission from my mistress; she would gladly grant me permission. I would cut wood, sell it, and buy food with it.
Hadith 23724
Abu Muslim (rahimahullah) says that once I was with Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) when he saw a man who had become impure and wanted to take off his leather socks. Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) instructed him to wipe over the socks and the turban, and to wipe the amount of his forehead, and said: I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over his leather socks and his turban (head covering).

It is narrated from Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever performs ghusl on Friday, attains purity as much as possible, applies oil, uses the fragrance of his house, then sets out towards the mosque and does not separate two people, offers prayer as much as possible, and remains silent when the Imam is delivering the sermon, then all his sins are forgiven until the next Friday.

It is narrated from Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he reached near a city, he said to his companions, "Leave me so that I may present the invitation to them in the same manner as I saw the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) inviting." Then he said to the people of the city, "I was one of you; Allah has guided me to Islam. If you also accept Islam, you will have the same rights as we have. It is narrated from Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever guards the borders for one day or night, it is better than a month of continuous fasting and prayer. And whoever dies while guarding the borders in the path of Allah, Allah continues his reward until he is resurrected, and he will remain safe from the punishment of the grave.
Hadith 23736
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was from a place in the province of Isfahan in Persia, called Jay. My father was the chief and leader of that place and loved me very much. His love for me grew so much that he kept me at home like a girl. I worked so hard in my ancient religion of Magianism that I became the guardian of the fire temple, whose fire was never allowed to be extinguished. My father had a very large estate. One day, he became busy with some work and said to me, "Son! Today, because I am occupied with this construction work, I could not go to the fields, so you go there and take care of them and inform me of any important matters." I set out with the intention of going to the fields. On the way, I passed by a Christian church. I heard their voices from inside the church; they were praying. Since my father had kept me at home, I knew nothing of people's affairs. So, when I passed by them and heard their voices, I went inside out of curiosity. I saw them praying and liked it, and I began to prefer their religion. I thought, "By Allah, this religion is better than ours." I stayed there until evening and did not go to my father's fields. I asked them where the center of this religion was. They said, "In the land of Syria." At night, I returned home, and my family asked, "Where were you all day?" I told them the whole story. My father said, "Son, that religion is not good. The religion of your forefathers is better." I said, "No, by Allah, their religion is better." My father feared that I might leave, so he put a shackle on my foot and imprisoned me at home. I sent word to those Christians to inform me when merchants from Syria, who often came, arrived. Some merchants came, and the Christians informed me. When they were about to return, I cut off my shackle, ran away, and went with them to Syria. Upon arrival, I inquired who was the most knowledgeable in this religion. People told me that a certain priest in the church was the most learned. I went to him and said, "I wish to enter your religion and serve you." He accepted me, and I stayed with him, but he turned out to be a bad man. He would encourage people to give charity, but whatever was collected, he would keep in his own treasury and give nothing to the poor. He accumulated seven pots of gold and silver. I hated him intensely for these actions. When he died and the Christians gathered to bury him, I told them, "He was a very bad man. He used to urge you to give charity, but when you brought it to him, he would store it for himself and give nothing to the poor." They asked, "How do you know this?" I said, "I can show you his treasure." They said, "Show us." So I showed them the place, and they found seven pots filled with gold and silver. Seeing this, they said, "By Allah, we will never bury him." So they crucified him and stoned him with stones. They appointed another man in his place, who was better than him and uninterested in the world. I have never seen anyone more devoted to prayer, more ascetic, or more devoted to worship day and night than him. I stayed with him and loved him more than anyone before. Eventually, he too was about to die, so I asked him to advise me whom to go to. He said, "There is only one person in the world on my path, and he is in Mosul. Go to him." After his death, I went to Mosul and told my story to that man. He kept me with him, and he too was a good man. When he was about to die, I asked him where I should go. He said, "Go to such-and-such person in Nasibin." I went to him and told him my story. He kept me with him, and he too was a good man. When he was about to die, I asked him where I should go. He said, "Go to such-and-such person in Amuriyah." I went there and stayed with him in the same way. There, I also did some work and acquired some cows and goats. When his death approached, I asked him where I should go. He said, "By Allah, there is no one left on our path who is learned, but the time of the coming of the Prophet of the Last Age is near. He will be on the religion of Abraham, will be born in Arabia, and his place of migration will be a land with abundant date palms, between two stony tracts. He will accept gifts but not eat charity, and between his shoulders will be the seal of Prophethood. If you can, go to that land." After his death, some merchants from the tribe of Banu Kalb passed by. I said to them, "Take me with you to Arabia, and in return, these cows and goats are yours." They agreed and took me to Wadi al-Qura (i.e., Makkah), and I gave them the cows and goats. But they wronged me by presenting me as their slave in Makkah and sold me ahead. A Jew from Banu Qurayza bought me and took me to his homeland, Madinah Tayyibah. As soon as I saw Madinah Tayyibah, I recognized it from the signs my companion (the priest) in Amuriyah had told me. I stayed there until the Holy Prophet ﷺ migrated from Makkah to Madinah Tayyibah. One day, I was working in my master's garden when his cousin came and said, "May Allah destroy Banu Qaylah! They are gathering in Quba around a man who has just arrived and claims to be a Prophet." Hearing this, I was so overwhelmed that I thought I would fall on my master. Then I climbed down from the tree and asked his cousin, "What did you say? What did you say?" My master got angry and slapped me, saying, "What concern is this of yours? Go and do your work." I thought, "No matter," and resolved to find out more about him. I had some savings. In the evening, I took them and went to the service of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, who was still in Quba. I presented myself and said, "I have heard that you are a righteous man and that you have poor and needy people with you. This is charity, and I consider you more deserving of it than others." The Prophet ﷺ did not eat from it himself but told his companions (the poor) to eat. I said to myself, "One sign is fulfilled." Then I returned to Madinah and collected something. During this time, the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah. I presented some dates and food and said, "This is a gift." The Prophet ﷺ ate from it. I said to myself, "The second sign is also fulfilled." After that, I once presented myself to the Prophet ﷺ when he was in Baqi' attending the funeral of a companion. I greeted him and began to move behind him. The Prophet ﷺ understood and removed his blessed cloak from his back. I saw the seal of Prophethood and, in my excitement, kissed it and began to weep. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Come forward." I came forward and told the whole story. After that, I remained busy in the duties of slavery, and for this reason, I could not participate in Badr and Uhud. Once, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Make a contract of manumission with your master." I did so. He set two conditions: forty uqiyah of gold (one uqiyah is forty dirhams, and one dirham is about 3-4 mashas), and that I should plant and nurture three hundred date palms until they bear fruit. The Prophet ﷺ told his companions to help their brother. They helped me with the trees in such a way that one gave me thirty saplings, another twenty, another fifteen, and another ten. Each person helped according to his capacity until I had three hundred saplings. The Prophet ﷺ said to me, "Salman, dig the holes for them and inform me when you are done. I will plant them with my own hands." So, with the help of my companions, I dug the holes and, when finished, informed the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ went with me to the garden. We would hand him each sapling, and he would plant it with his blessed hands. By the One in whose hand is Salman's soul, not a single sapling withered, and thus I fulfilled the condition of the garden. Now only the money remained. Coincidentally, from a certain expedition, a piece of gold the size of a hen's egg came to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ gave it to Salman and said, "Take this and give it for your manumission." I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Will this be enough? The amount is very large." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah, the Exalted, will make it sufficient." So I took it, weighed out forty uqiyah of gold, and gave it to my master, and I was freed. Then I participated in the Battle of the Trench and did not miss any battle after that.

Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when I said, "O Messenger of Allah! How will this amount, which is due upon me, be fulfilled?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took it, passed it over his blessed tongue, and said, "Take it and pay their due from it." So I took it and paid them their full right, that is, forty uqiyah.

If you refuse, then pay the jizya, and in that case, you will be humbled. If you refuse even that, then we will respond to you equally. Surely, Allah does not like those who are treacherous." He continued in this way for three days, and when the fourth day came, he advanced towards the city with the people and conquered it.
