It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) during the middle days of Tashreeq delivering a sermon, saying: "O people! Your Lord is one and your father is one. Remember! No Arab has superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have superiority over an Arab, nor does a red-skinned person have superiority over a black-skinned person, nor does a black-skinned person have superiority over a red-skinned person—except by piety. Have I conveyed the message of Allah?" The people said, "You have conveyed it." Then he said, "What day is this?" The people said, "A sacred day." He said, "What month is this?" The people said, "A sacred month." He said, "What city is this?" The people said, "A sacred city." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then Allah has made your blood and your wealth sacred among you just as the sanctity of this day, in this month, in this city. Have I conveyed the message of Allah?" The people said, "You have conveyed it." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Those who are present should convey this message to those who are absent."
