Abu Salamah, may Allah have mercy on him, says that sometimes I used to see frightening dreams, but I did not let them become a burden on me until one day I met Hazrat Abu Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him. I mentioned this to him, so he narrated this hadith to me: The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Good dreams are from Allah and bad dreams are from Satan. Therefore, whoever sees a disliked dream should not mention it to anyone. Rather, after seeing the dream, he should spit lightly three times to his left and seek refuge in Allah from its evil. In this way, the dream will not harm him."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about his fasting, so the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became displeased. Seeing this, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "We are pleased with Allah as our Lord, Islam as our religion, and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as our Messenger, and upon this we have pledged allegiance." Then another man or Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) himself stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah! If a person fasts continuously, what is the ruling?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "His fasting and not fasting are both the same." The questioner asked, "How about fasting two days and leaving one day?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Who has the strength for that?" The questioner asked, "How about leaving two days and fasting one day?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Perhaps this is praiseworthy in the sight of Allah." The questioner asked, "How about fasting one day and leaving one day?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "That is the way of my brother, Hazrat Dawood (peace be upon him)." The questioner asked about fasting on Mondays and Thursdays. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "On that day I was born and on that day revelation was sent down to me. Fasting three days in every month and fasting the whole month of Ramadan is equal to fasting always." The questioner asked, "What is the ruling of fasting on the Day of Arafah?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is an expiation for the sins of the previous and coming year." The questioner asked about the ruling of fasting on the Day of Ashura, so he said, "It is an expiation for the sins of the previous year."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me, if I am martyred in the way of Allah while I remain steadfast with the intention of reward, I advance and do not retreat, will Allah, by virtue of this, expiate all my sins?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Yes! If you are martyred in this way, Allah will expiate your sins." After some time, that person asked the same question again, so the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave the same answer, but with this exception: "Except for debt," and said, "Jibreel (peace be upon him) has just informed me of this."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Has he left any debt behind?" The people replied, "Yes! Two dinars." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Has he left anything in inheritance?" The people replied, "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then you should offer the funeral prayer of your companion yourselves." It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were on a journey with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If you do not reach water, you will remain thirsty." So, the hasty people went out in search of water, and I stayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). During this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to doze off and leaned from his mount, so I supported him without waking him, until he became upright on his mount. Then he leaned again, and I straightened him without waking him, until he became upright on his mount. Then he leaned even more than before, until it was near that he would fall, so I came again and supported him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then raised his head and said, "Who is this?" I replied, "Abu Qatadah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Since when have you been walking with me like this?" I replied, "I have been walking with you like this all night." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "May Allah protect you as you have protected the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I think we should camp." So, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached near a tree and camped there. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do you see anyone?" I replied, "Here is a rider," until seven riders gathered. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You take care of our prayer." So, we slept, and only the heat of the sun woke us up. We woke up, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted and left from there, and we also started walking slowly. When we reached a place, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) camped and said, "Does any of you have water?" I replied, "Yes! There is a little water in my ablution vessel." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Bring it." I brought that water, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Perform ablution with it." So, all the people performed ablution, and some water remained. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), "Protect the vessel of this ablution water, for soon a strange matter will be revealed from it." Then Hazrat Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the call to prayer, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) prayed two rak'ahs (Sunnah), then prayed the morning prayer. (After that) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted, and we also mounted with him. One of us said to another, "What will be the expiation for our mistake in the prayer, that we did not wake up?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "What are you people saying? If it is a worldly matter, then fine, but if it is a religious matter, then tell me as well." We said, "O Messenger of Allah! We were negligent in the prayer." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "There is no negligence in sleep, but negligence is in wakefulness. If this happens to anyone, he should pray whenever he wakes up, and when the next day comes, he should pray at its time." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "What do you think the other people have done?" They replied, "Yesterday you yourself said that if you do not reach water, you will remain thirsty, so people will be searching for water." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself said, "When the people woke up in the morning, they did not find their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Among the people present, Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will be behind you. It is not befitting the status of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he would leave you behind and himself go ahead towards water.' If those people accept the words of Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), they will attain guidance." He said this three times. Then we reached the people at a time when the day had advanced and the heat had increased. The people began to say, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), thirst has destroyed us and our necks are breaking." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You have not been destroyed." Then he said, "O Abu Qatadah, bring my small bowl." I brought it, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then f

Khalid bin Sameer says that once Abdullah bin Rabah came to us. I saw that many people had gathered around him and they were saying that Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) told us that once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched an army called "Jaish Umara" and said: "Your commander is Zaid bin Harithah. If Zaid is martyred, then Ja'far will be the commander. If Ja'far is also martyred, then Abdullah bin Rawahah Al-Ansari will be the commander." Upon this, Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, I did not think that you would appoint Zaid as commander over me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Set out, for you do not know in which matter there is goodness for you." So that army set out. After some time had passed, one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and ordered the call for "the prayer is ready" to be made and said, "There is a distressing news. Shall I not inform you about that army of Mujahideen?" They set out from here and when they faced the enemy, Zaid was martyred. Pray for his forgiveness." The people did so. Then Ja'far bin Abi Talib took the flag and attacked the enemy fiercely until he too was martyred. I bear witness to his martyrdom, so pray for his forgiveness as well. Then Abdullah bin Rawahah took the flag and stood firm with great perseverance until he too was martyred. Pray for his forgiveness as well. Then Khalid bin Walid took the flag, even though no one had appointed him as commander. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his finger and said, "O Allah! He is one of Your swords, so help him." From that day, Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) was called "Saifullah" (the Sword of Allah). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Set out to help your brothers, and let no man stay behind." So, in that intense heat, people set out on foot and mounted.

Tell me, if I fight in the way of Allah and am martyred, will I be able to walk in Paradise with a sound leg?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes!" When the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by them, he said, "I see you walking in Paradise with this leg of yours, sound and whole."
