It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever seizes the wealth of a Muslim by swearing a false oath will meet Allah in such a state that Allah will be angry with him. Upon hearing this, Hazrat Ash'ath (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This command was revealed regarding my incident, the details of which are as follows: There was some land shared between me and a Jew. The Jew denied my share, so I brought him to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: Do you have any witnesses? I replied: No. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Jew: Then you must swear an oath. I said: O Messenger of Allah! He will take my property by swearing an oath. Upon this, Allah revealed this verse up to the end: "Indeed, those who exchange Allah’s covenant and their oaths for a small price..."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ash'ath bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I appeared before the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a delegation who did not consider me superior among them. I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! We think that your lineage joins with ours?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "We are the descendants of Nadr bin Kinana. We do not accuse our mother of immorality, nor do we deny our lineage from our father." After this, Hazrat Ash'ath (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say, "If anyone is brought to me who denies the lineage of the Quraysh from Nadr bin Kinana, I will punish him with lashes."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ash'ath bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) that I came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the delegation of Kindah. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, "Do you have any children?" I replied, "When I was leaving towards you, a son was born to me from Bint Jamd. I wished that instead of him, people would have been satisfied with water, that would have been better." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do not say such things, because children are the coolness of the eyes, and if they die, they become a source of reward. Yes, if you must say something, then say that children become a cause of cowardice and grief." (He said this sentence twice.)

Shafeeq bin Salamah says that once Hazrat Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated three hadiths to us, one of which was that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever seizes the wealth of a Muslim by swearing a false oath will meet Allah in such a state that Allah will be angry with him. Meanwhile, Hazrat Ash’ath (may Allah be pleased with him) also arrived and asked, “Which hadiths did Abu Abdur Rahman narrate?” We told him. Hazrat Ash’ath said, “This command was revealed regarding my incident, the details of which are as follows: There was some land jointly owned by me and my cousin. My cousin denied my share, so I brought him to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, ‘Do you have any witnesses?’ I replied, ‘No.’ The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Jew, ‘Then you swear an oath.’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! It is narrated from Hazrat Ash'ath (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from the tribe of Kindah and a man from Hadhramaut brought their dispute regarding a piece of land in Yemen to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The man from Hadhramaut said, "O Messenger of Allah! He and his father together have usurped my land." The Kindite said, "O Messenger of Allah! This is my land which I inherited from my father." The man from Hadhramaut said, "O Messenger of Allah! Make him swear an oath that he does not know that this is my land and my father's land which his father had usurped." The Kindite was ready to swear the oath, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whoever acquires any wealth through his oath will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection in the state that he will be afflicted with leprosy." Hearing this, the Kindite said, "This land is his and his father's."
