Hadith of Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla from Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 21171
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عِيسَى ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ فِي الْمَسْجِدَ ، فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ ، فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً أَنْكَرْتُهَا عَلَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ آخَرُ ، فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً سِوَى قِرَاءَةِ صَاحِبِهِ ، فَقُمْنَا جَمِيعًا ، فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ هَذَا قَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً أَنْكَرْتُهَا عَلَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ هَذَا ، فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً غَيْرَ قِرَاءَةِ صَاحِبِهِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اقْرَآ " فَقَرَآ ، قَالَ : " أَصَبْتُمَا " فَلَمَّا ، قَالَ لَهُمَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الَّذِي ، قَالَ : كَبُرَ عَلَيَّ ، وَلَا إِذْ كُنْتُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى الَّذِي غَشِيَنِي ، ضَرَبَ فِي صَدْرِي ، فَفِضْتُ عَرَقًا ، وَكَأَنَّمَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى اللَّهِ فَرَقًا ، فَقَالَ : " يَا أُبَيُّ إِنَّ رَبِّي أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ أَنْ اقْرَأْ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى حَرْفٍ ، فَرَدَدْتُ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ هَوِّنْ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ أَنْ اقْرَأْهُ عَلَى حَرْفَيْنِ ، فَرَدَدْتُ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ هَوِّنْ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ أَنْ اقْرَأْهُ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ ، وَلَكَ بِكُلِّ رَدَّةٍ مَسْأَلَةٌ تَسْأَلُنِيهَا ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِأُمَّتِي ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِأُمَّتِي ، وَأَخَّرْتُ الثَّالِثَةَ لِيَوْمٍ يَرْغَبُ إِلَيَّ فِيهِ الْخَلْقُ ، حَتَّى إِبْرَاهِيمَ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was in the mosque when a man came and started reciting the Qur'an in a way that I did not know. Then another man came and he also recited it in a different manner. We all gathered and went to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and I said, "O Messenger of Allah! This man came to the mosque and recited the Qur'an in a way that amazed me, then this other one came and he also recited it differently." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked both of them to recite, so both of them recited and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved of their recitation. On that day, the doubts that came into my mind regarding Islam had never come before. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), seeing this, struck his hand on my chest, which removed all those doubts, and I was overwhelmed and felt as if I was seeing Allah Almighty before me. Then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Jibreel and Mika'il (peace be upon them) came to me. Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) said, 'Recite the Holy Qur'an on one letter.' I sent a message to my Lord to make it easy for my Ummah. In this way, it continued until it reached seven letters, and Allah sent me a message to recite it on seven letters, and for each time, you may ask Me for one request, I will grant it." So I asked twice for the forgiveness of my Ummah, and I kept the third thing for that day when all creation, even Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him), will come to me.
Hadith 21172
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ عِنْدَ أَضَاةَ بَنِي غِفَارٍ ، قَالَ : " فَأَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ أُمَّتَكَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى حَرْفٍ ، قَالَ : أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ مُعَافَاتَهُ وَمَغْفِرَتَهُ ، وَإِنَّ أُمَّتِي لَا تُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ الثَّانِيَةَ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ أُمَّتَكَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى حَرْفَيْنِ ، فَقَالَ : أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ مُعَافَاتَهُ وَمَغْفِرَتَهُ ، إِنَّ أُمَّتِي لَا تُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ " ، ثُمَّ جَاءَه الثَّالِثَةَ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ أُمَّتَكَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى ثَلاَثَةُ أَحْرُفٍ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : أَسْأَلُ الله مُعَافَاتَهُ وَمَغْفِرَتَهُ ، فَإِنَّ أُمَّتِي لا تُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ الرَابعة ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ الله يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ ، فَأَيُّمَا حَرْفٍ قَرَءُوا عَلَيْهِ ، فَقَدْ أَصَابُوا " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was near a well of Banu Ghifar when Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) appeared and said, "Your Lord commands you to teach your Ummah the Holy Qur'an on one letter." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "I seek pardon and forgiveness from Allah, for my Ummah does not have the strength for this." So Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) came again with the message and permission to recite on two letters. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave the same reply again. The third time, the same happened. The fourth time, Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) came with the message to recite on seven letters and said, "Whichever letter they recite accordingly, they will do correctly."
Hadith 21173
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ عَزْرَةَ ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ الْعُرَنِيِّ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْجَزَّارِ ، عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، فِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُمْ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الأَدْنَى دُونَ الْعَذَابِ الأَكْبَرِ سورة السجدة آية 21 ، قَالَ : " الْمُصِيبَاتُ وَالدُّخَانُ قَدْ مَضَيَا ، وَالْبَطْشَةُ وَاللِّزَامُ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding this verse "And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment..." that the punishment of calamities and smoke, these two punishments have already passed, and also the punishment of Batsha and Lizam.
Hadith 21174
حَدَّثَنِي عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ أَبِي جَنَابٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عِيسَى ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، حَدَّثَنِي أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ ، فَقَالَ : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ لِي أَخًا وَبِهِ وَجَعٌ ! قَالَ : " وَمَا وَجَعُهُ ؟ " ، قَالَ : بِهِ لَمَمٌ ، قَالَ : " فَائْتِنِي بِهِ ، فَوَضَعَهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَعَوَّذَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ ، وَأَرْبَعِ آيَاتٍ مِنْ أَوَّلِ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ ، وَهَاتَيْنِ الْآيَتَيْنِ وَإِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ سورة البقرة آية 163 وَآيَةِ الْكُرْسِيِّ ، وَثَلَاثِ آيَاتٍ مِنْ آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ ، وَآيَةٍ مِنْ آلِ عِمْرَانَ شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلا هُوَ سورة آل عمران آية 18 وَآيَةٍ مِنْ الْأَعْرَافِ إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ سورة الأعراف آية 54 وَآخِرِ سُورَةِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فَتَعَالَى اللَّهُ الْمَلِكُ الْحَقُّ سورة طه آية 114 وَآيَةٍ مِنْ سُورَةِ الْجِنِّ وَأَنَّهُ تَعَالَى جَدُّ رَبِّنَا سورة الجن آية 3 ، وَعَشْرِ آيَاتٍ مِنْ أَوَّلِ الصَّافَّاتِ سورة الصافات آية 1 ، وَثَلَاثِ آيَاتٍ مِنْ آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْحَشْرِ ، وَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ سورة الإخلاص آية 1 ، وَالْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ ، فَقَامَ الرَّجُلُ كَأَنَّهُ لَمْ يَشْتَكِ قَطُّ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was present in the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a Bedouin came and said, "O Messenger of Allah! My brother is suffering from distress." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What is his distress?" He replied, "He is afflicted with madness and insanity (lunacy)." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Bring him to me." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him and seated him in front of himself, and recited over him Surah Al-Fatiha, the first four verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, "Wa ilahukum ilahun wahid...", Ayat al-Kursi, the last three verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, one verse from Surah Aal-e-Imran "Shahidallahu annahu la ilaha illa Huwa...", one verse from Surah Al-A'raf "Inna rabbakumullahu allathee khalaqa as-samawati wal-ard...", the last verses of Surah Al-Mu’minun "Fata'ala Allahu al-Malikul Haqq...", the verse from Surah Al-Jinn "Wa annahu ta'ala jaddu rabbina...", the first ten verses of Surah As-Saffat..., the last three verses of Surah Al-Hashr..., Surah Al-Ikhlas and Al-Mu'awwidhatayn, and blew over him. That man stood up as if he had never been ill.
Hadith 21175
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الله ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الْأَسَدِيُّ لُوَيْنٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ بْنِ أَعْيَنَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ الْأَفْطَسُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ فِي أَضَاةِ بَنِي غِفَارٍ ، فَقَالَ : " يَا مُحَمَّدُ ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تَقْرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى حَرْفٍ ، فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يَزِيدُهُ حَتَّى بَلَغَ سَبْعَةَ أَحْرُفٍ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) appeared in the presence of the Messenger of Allah while the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was near the well of Banu Idhah, and said, "O Muhammad! Allah Almighty commands you to recite the Holy Qur'an on one mode (harf)," and then gradually increased it until it reached the number seven.
Hadith 21176
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الله ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا غُنْدَرٌ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ الْحَكَمِْ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ أُمَّتَكَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ ، فَأَيُّمَا حَرْفٍ قَرَءُوا عَلَيْهِ ، فَقَدْ أَصَابُوا " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) appeared in the presence of the Messenger of Allah while the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was near the well of Banu Idhah, and said: O Muhammad! Allah Almighty commands you to recite the Holy Qur'an on seven letters; whichever letter you recite with, you will have recited correctly.
Hadith 21177
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الله ، حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ السَّبَّاكُ الْبَصْرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُحَادَةَ ، عَنْ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ بِأَضَاةِ بَنِي غِفَارٍ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ أُمَّتَكَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى حَرْفٍ وَاحِدٍ ، فَقَالَ : أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ مُعَافَاتَهُ وَمَغْفِرَتَهُ " ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ إِلَى أَنْ قَالَ : إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ أُمَّتَكَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ ، فَمَنْ قَرَأَ حَرْفًا مِنْهَا ، فَهُوَ كَمَا قَالَ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) appeared in the presence of the Messenger of Allah while the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was near the well of Banu Idhah, and said, "O Muhammad! Allah commands you to recite the Holy Qur'an on one mode (harf)..." Then the narrator mentioned the entire hadith, and gradually, step by step, the number increased until it reached seven.
Hadith 21178
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي زِيَادِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : انْتَسَبَ رَجُلَانِ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا : أَنَا فُلَانُ بْنُ فُلَانٍ بْنُ فُلاَنٍ ، فَمَنْ أَنْتَ لَا أُمَّ لَكَ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " انْتَسَبَ رَجُلَانِ عَلَى عَهْدِ مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام ، فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا : أَنَا فُلَانُ بْنُ فُلَانٍ حَتَّى عَدَّ تِسْعَةً ، فَمَنْ أَنْتَ لَا أُمَّ لَكَ ؟ قَالَ : أَنَا فُلَانُ بْنُ فُلَانٍ ، ابْنُ الْإِسْلَامِ ، قَالَ فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ إِلَى مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام إِنَّ هَذَيْنِ الْمُنْتَسِبَيْنِ ، أَمَّا أَنْتَ أَيُّهَا الْمُنْتَمِي أَوْ الْمُنْتَسِبُ إِلَى تِسْعَةٍ فِي النَّارِ فَأَنْتَ عَاشِرُهُمْ ، وَأَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا هَذَا الْمُنْتَسِبُ إِلَى اثْنَيْنِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ ، فَأَنْتَ ثَالِثُهُمَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the blessed era of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), two men stated their lineage. One of them said to the other, "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, so who are you? May your mother not remain!" Upon hearing this, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that during the time of Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him), two men stated their lineage. One of them said to the other, "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so," and he counted nine ancestors from among his forefathers and said, "So who are you? May your mother not remain!" The other replied, "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, son of Islam." Allah Almighty sent revelation to Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) regarding both of them: "O you who ascribe yourself to nine men! All of them are in Hell, and you, the tenth, will be with them in Hell. And O you who ascribe your lineage to two men of Paradise! You will be the third with them in Paradise."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الله ، حَدَّثَنِي وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عِيسَى ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، حَدَّثَنِي أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ، فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ ، فَصَلَّى ، فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً أَنْكَرْتُهَا عَلَيْهِ ، فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ آخَرُ ، فَصَلَّى ، فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً سِوَى قِرَاءَةِ صَاحِبِهِ ، فَلَمَّا قَضَيْنَا الصَّلَاةَ ، دَخَلْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ هَذَا قَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً أَنْكَرْتُهَا عَلَيْهِ ، فَدَخَلَ هَذَا ، فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً سِوَى قِرَاءَةِ صَاحِبِهِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اقْرَءُوا " فَقَرَءُوا ، فَقَالَ : " قَدْ أَحْسَنْتُمْ " ، فَسَقَطَ فِي نَفْسِي مِنَ التَّكْذِيبِ ، وَلَا إِذْ كُنْتُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا قَدْ غَشِيَنِي ، ضَرَبَ صَدْرِي ، قَالَ : فَفِضْتُ عَرَقًا ، وَكَأَنَّمَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى رَبِّي فَرَقًا ، فَقَالَ لِي : " أُبَيٌّ ! إِنَّ رَبِّي أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ ، فَقَالَ لِي : اقْرَأْ عَلَى حَرْفٍ ، فَرَدَدْتُ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ هَوِّنْ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، فَرَدَّ إِلَيَّ أَنْ اقْرَأْ عَلَى حَرْفَيْنِ ، فَرَدَدْتُ إِلَيْهِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ أَنْ هَوِّنْ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ أَنْ اقْرَأْ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ ، وَلَكَ بِكُلِّ رَدَّةٍ رَدَدْتَهَا سُؤْلَكَ أُعْطِيكَهَا ، فَقُلْتُ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِأُمَّتِي ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِأُمَّتِي ، وَأَخَّرْتُ الثَّالِثَةَ لِيَوْمٍ يَرْغَبُ إِلَيَّ فِيهِ الْخَلْقُ ، حَتَّى إِبْرَاهِيمَ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was in the mosque when a man came and started reciting the Qur'an in a way that I did not know. Then another man came and he also recited it in a different manner. We all gathered and went to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and I said, "O Messenger of Allah! This man came to the mosque and recited the Qur'an in a way that amazed me, then this other one came and he also recited it differently." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked both of them to recite, so both of them recited and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved of their recitation. On that day, the doubts that came into my mind regarding Islam had never come before. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), seeing this, struck his hand on my chest, which removed all those doubts, and I was overwhelmed and felt as if I was seeing Allah Almighty before me. Then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Jibreel and Mika'il (peace be upon them) came to me. Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) said, 'Recite the Holy Qur'an on one letter.' I sent a message to my Lord to make it easy for my Ummah. In this way, it continued until it reached seven letters, and Allah sent me a message to recite it on seven letters, and for each time, you may ask Me for one request, I will grant it." So I asked twice for the forgiveness of my Ummah, and I kept the third thing for that day when all creation, even Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him), will come to me.
