حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Hadith of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 20616
حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَنْصُورٌ ، وَيُونُسُ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ ، " إِذَا آلَيْتَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ ، فَرَأَيْتَ غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا ، فَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ ، وَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: O Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), when you swear an oath about something and then see better in another matter, then do the better thing and offer expiation for your oath.
Hadith 20617
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْجُرَيْرِيُّ ، عَنْ حَيَّانَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : بَيْنَمَا أَنَا أَتَرَامَى بِأَسْهُمِي فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَاللَّهِ إِذْ كُسِفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَنَبَذْتُهُنَّ وَسَعَيْتُ أَنْظُرُ مَا حَدَثَ كُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، " وَإِذَا هُوَ رَافِعٌ يَدَيْهِ يُسَبِّحُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، وَيَحْمَدُ ، وَيُهَلِّلُ ، وَيُكَبِّرُ ، وَيَدْعُو ، فَلَمْ يَزَلْ كَذَلِكَ حَتَّى حُسِرَ عَنِ الشَّمْسِ ، فَقَرَأَ سُورَتَيْنِ ، وَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) that once during the blessed life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I was practicing archery when the sun was eclipsed. I threw my arrows to one side and ran towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to see what he would do at the time of the solar eclipse. When I reached there, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had raised his hands and was engaged in glorifying Allah, praising Him, declaring His oneness, magnifying Him, and supplicating. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained engaged in this act until the sun became bright again. Then he recited two surahs and led two rak'ahs (units of prayer).
Hadith 20618
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ " لَا تَسْأَلِ الْإِمَارَةَ ، فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ أُعْطِيتَهَا عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ وُكِلْتَ إِلَيْهَا ، وَإِنْ أُعْطِيتَهَا عَنْ غَيْرِ مَسْأَلَةٍ أُعِنْتَ عَلَيْهَا ، وَإِذَا حَلَفْتَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ ، فَرَأَيْتَ غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا ، فَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ ، وَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: O Abdur Rahman, never ask for leadership (government), because if it is given to you as a result of your asking, you will be left to it (without help), but if it is given to you without your asking, you will be helped in it. And when you swear an oath about something and then see a better option, then do the better thing and offer expiation for your oath.
Hadith 20619
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ حَكِيمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي لَبِيدٍ ، قَالَ : غَزَوْنَا مَعَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ كَابُلَ ، فَأَصَابَ النَّاسُ غَنَمًا فَانْتَهَبُوهَا ، فَأَمَرَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ مُنَادِيًا يُنَادِي إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " مَنْ انْتَهَبَ نُهْبَةً ، فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا " ، فَرُدُّوا هَذِهِ الْغَنَمَ ، فَرَدُّوهَا ، فَقَسَمَهَا بِالسَّوِيَّةِ .
Abu Labid says that we participated in the jihad of Kabul with Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him). People saw some goats at one place and took them as loot. Seeing this, Hazrat Abdur Rahman ordered a caller to announce that I have heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever commits looting is not one of us, so return these goats. Consequently, the people returned the goats, and then he distributed the goats equally among them.
Hadith 20620
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ أَبِي بِخَطِّ يَدِهِ ، وَأَكْبَرُ عِلْمِي أَنِّي قَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْهُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا نَاصِحُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ أَبُو الْعَلَاءِ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمَّارُ بْنُ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ، أَنَّهُ مَرَّ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ وَهُوَ عَلَى نَهَرِ أُمِّ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَسِيلُ الْمَاءُ مَعَ غِلْمَتِهِ وَمَوَالِيهِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَمَّارٌ : يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ ، الْجُمُعَةَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَمُرَةَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ : " إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ مَطَرٍ وَابِلٍ ، فَلْيُصَلِّ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي رَحْلِهِ " . .
Ammar bin Abi Ammar says that once he passed by Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) who was at the canal of Umm Abdullah and, along with boys and slaves, was letting the water flow. Ammar said to him, "O Abu Saeed, today is Friday." He replied, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: On the day when there is heavy rain, you should pray in your tents."
Hadith 20621
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا نَاصِحُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ أَبُو الْعَلَاءِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمَّارُ بْنُ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ : سَمِعْتُ الْقَوَارِيرِيَّ يَقُولُ : كُنْتُ أَمُرُّ بِنَاصِحٍ فَيُحَدِّثُنِي ، فَإِذَا سَأَلْتُهُ الزِّيَادَةَ قَالَ : لَيْسَ عِنْدِي غَيْرُ ذَا ، وَكَانَ ضَرِيرًا.
Abdullah narrated to us, Ubaydullah ibn Umar al-Qawariri narrated to me, Nasih ibn al-Ala Abu al-Ala narrated to us, Ammar ibn Abi Ammar narrated to us, from Abdur-Rahman ibn Samurah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, the like of it. Abu Abdur-Rahman said: I heard al-Qawariri say: I used to pass by Nasih and he would narrate to me, and if I asked him for more, he would say: I have nothing other than this, and he was blind.
Hadith 20622
حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُبَارَكُ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَمُرَةَ الْقُرَشِيُّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ " لَا تَسْأَلِ الْإِمَارَةَ ، فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ أُعْطِيتَهَا عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ ، أُوكِلْتَ إِلَيْهَا ، وَإِنْ أُعْطِيتَهَا عَنْ غَيْرِ مَسْأَلَةٍ ، أُعِنْتَ عَلَيْهَا ، وَإِذَا حَلَفْتَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ ، فَرَأَيْتَ غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا ، فَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ ، وَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ " . .

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الله ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سِمَاكُ بْنُ عَطِيَّةَ ، وَيُونُسُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ.
Abdullah narrated to us, Abu Kamil al-Jahdari narrated to us, Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, Simak ibn Atiyyah and Yunus ibn Ubayd narrated to us, from al-Hasan, from Abdur-Rahman ibn Samurah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, the like of it.
Hadith 20624
حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " لَا تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ ، وَلَا بِالطَّوَاغِيتِ " ، وَقَالَ يَزِيدُ : " وَالطَّوَاغِي ".
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Samrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not swear by the names of your forefathers or idols.
Hadith 20625
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : ذَكَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ : " لَا تَسْأَلِ الْإِمَارَةَ ، فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ تُعْطَهَا عَنْ غَيْرِ مَسْأَلَةٍ ، تُعَنْ عَلَيْهَا ، وَإِنْ تُعْطَهَا عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ ، تُكَلْ إِلَيْهَا ، وَإِذَا حَلَفْتَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ ، وَرَأَيْتَ غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا ، فَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ ، وَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ " .

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ حَكِيمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي لَبِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " مَنِ انْتَهَبَ نُهْبَةً فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا " .

حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، وَعَفَّانُ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ ، " لَا تَسْأَلْ الْإِمَارَةَ ، فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ أُوتِيتَهَا عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ وُكِلْتَ إِلَيْهَا ، وَإِنْ أُوتِيتَهَا عَنْ غَيْرِ مَسْأَلَةٍ أُعِنْتَ عَلَيْهَا ، وَإِذَا حَلَفْتَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ ، فَرَأَيْتَ غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا ، فَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ وَأْتِ ، الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ " ، قَالَ أَبِي : اتَّفَقَ عَفَّانُ وَأَسْوَدُ فِي حَدِيثِهِمَا ، فَقَالَا : " فَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ ثُمَّ ائْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ " ، وقَالَ أَبُو الْأَشْهَبِ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ فِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ فَبَدَأَ بِالْكَفَّارَةِ . .

Hadith 20629
حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُبَارَكُ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَمُرَةَ الْقُرَشِيُّ ، وَنَحْنُ بِكَابُلَ قَالَ : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ ، " لَا تَسْأَلِ الْإِمَارَةَ " فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ.
Husayn narrated to us, al-Mubarak narrated to us, from al-Hasan, Abd al-Rahman ibn Samurah al-Qurashi narrated to us, and we were in Kabul, he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, "O Abd al-Rahman, do not ask for leadership," and he mentioned the hadith.
Hadith 20630
حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : وَسَمِعْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ حَدَّثَنَا ضَمْرَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ شَوْذَبٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ ، عَنْ كَثِيرٍ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِأَلْفِ دِينَارٍ فِي ثَوْبِهِ ، حِينَ جَهَّزَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَيْشَ الْعُسْرَةِ ، قَالَ : فَصَبَّهَا فِي حِجْرِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَجَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُقَلِّبُهَا بِيَدِهِ ، وَيَقُولُ : " مَا ضَرَّ ابْنُ عَفَّانَ مَا عَمِلَ بَعْدَ الْيَوْمِ " يُرَدِّدُهَا مِرَارًا .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was preparing for the "Jaysh Usrah" (the expedition of Tabuk), Hazrat Uthman Ghani came with one thousand dinars in a cloth and placed them in the lap of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept turning them over with his hand and kept saying, "Today, whatever deed Ibn Affan does will not harm him." He repeated this sentence several times.
