Hadith 19369
It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I submitted to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Our area is a hunting region. Some of us throw an arrow at the game, and the game remains hidden from him for one or two days, then he finds it and his arrow is embedded in its body. What is the ruling about this? The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you see your arrow in it and do not see any sign of anything else, and you are certain that it was your arrow that killed it, then you may eat it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed: "During the nights of Ramadan, you may eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread," I took two threads, one black and one white, and placed them under a pillow. I kept looking at them, but the black thread did not become distinct from the white thread, nor the white from the black. When morning came, I went to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and related the whole incident. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Your pillow is very wide; what is meant is the light of day and the darkness of night."

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim Tai (may Allah be pleased with him): I asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the game that dies due to the broad side of an arrow. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The game which you kill with the sharp edge of the arrow, you may eat it, but the one which you kill with the broad side of the arrow is considered as mauqoozah (an animal that dies due to a blow), so do not eat it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah, we release our trained dogs for hunting?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Eat what they catch for you." I asked, "Even if the dog kills it?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Yes, provided that no other dogs have joined with it." I asked about the game that dies by the broad side of an arrow, so the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If you kill the game with the sharp edge of the arrow, you may eat it, but if it is killed by the broad side of the arrow, do not eat it."

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is not a single person among you except that his Lord will speak to him directly without any interpreter. He will look to his right and will see only what he has sent forth; he will look to his left and will see only what he has sent forth; and he will look in front of him and the Fire of Hell will confront him. Therefore, whoever among you can save himself from the Fire, even if it be by giving half a date in charity, then let him do so.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi that once I submitted in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, "O Messenger of Allah! My father used to maintain ties of kinship and do such and such deeds." The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Your father had one objective (fame) which he achieved." It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I submitted in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, "O Messenger of Allah! When we hunt, sometimes we do not find a knife, only a sharp stone or a stick with a sharp edge is available, so what should we do?" The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Take the name of Allah and shed blood with whatever you wish." I submitted, "I ask you about that food which I leave only out of necessity." The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Do not leave anything in which you appear to resemble Christianity."

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me about prayer and fasting and said, "Pray at such and such times, and fast. When the sun sets, eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct and clear from the black thread before you." And keep thirty fasts unless the moon is sighted before that. So I took two threads, one black and one white, and placed them under a pillow. I kept looking at them, but the black thread did not become distinct from the white, nor the white from the black. When morning came, I presented myself before the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and related the whole incident. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Your pillow is indeed very wide; what is meant is the light of the day and the darkness of the night."

Ibn Hudhaifah says that I learned a hadith from Hazrat ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), so I thought that since he is in Kufa, I should go to him and listen to it directly from him. So I went to him and said, “I have learned a hadith attributed to you, but I want to hear it from you myself.” He said, “Very well. When I heard the news of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) declaration of prophethood, I was greatly displeased. I left my area and reached the border of Rome and went to Caesar, but upon reaching there, I felt even more displeasure than I had felt upon hearing the news of prophethood. I thought, ‘Let me go to this man and see for myself. If he is a liar, he cannot harm me, and if he is truthful, I will know.’ So I returned and went to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When I arrived, people began to say, ‘Adi bin Hatim, Adi bin Hatim.’ I reached the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and he, may Allah have mercy on him, said to me, ‘O ‘Adi! Accept Islam and you will find peace.’ He repeated this three times. I said, ‘I am already following a religion.’ The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, ‘I know your religion better than you do.’ I said, ‘You know my religion better than I do?’ The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, ‘Yes! Are you not from the “Rukusiyyah” who consume a quarter of the spoils of your people?’ I said, ‘Why not?’ The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, ‘Even though this is not lawful in your religion.’ What the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said after this, I submitted to it. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, ‘I know what is preventing you from accepting Islam. You think that the followers of this religion are weak and insignificant people whom the Arabs have rejected. Tell me, do you know the city of Hira?’ I said, ‘I have not seen it, but I have heard of it.’ The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, ‘By the One in whose hand is my soul, Allah will complete this religion until a woman will leave Hira and perform tawaf of the House of Allah without any guard, and soon the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz will be conquered.’ I asked in amazement, ‘Kisra bin Hurmuz?’ The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, ‘Yes! Kisra bin Hurmuz. And soon so much wealth will be spent that there will be no one left to accept it.’ Hazrat ‘Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) says, ‘Indeed, now a woman leaves Hira and performs tawaf of the House of Allah without any guard, and I myself was among those who conquered the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz. And by the One in whose hand is my soul, the third thing will also certainly occur, because the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) foretold it.’

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If your hunted animal falls into water and drowns, then do not eat it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that I was at a place called "Aqrab" when the horsemen of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached us. They captured my paternal aunt and many people. When those people reached the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they were made to stand in a row. My paternal aunt said, "O Messenger of Allah! Those who weep have gone far away and the children have been separated. I have become very old and cannot perform any kind of service, so please have mercy on me, may Allah have mercy on you." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Who brought you?" She replied, "Adi bin Hatim." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The same one who is running away from Allah and His Messenger?" She said, "Even so, please have mercy on me." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to leave, and there was a man by his side, who was probably Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me, "Ask him for a riding animal." I requested it from him, and he ordered it for me.

After a short while, Adi went to her, and she said, "You have done something that your father did not do. Go to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) either out of eagerness or fear (but go for sure), because so-and-so went to him and he also received something, and so-and-so also went and he too received something." So I presented myself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and there was a woman and some children sitting there. They mentioned being close to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I understood that he was not a king like Caesar or Chosroes. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me, "O Adi! What is it that compels you to flee from saying 'La ilaha illallah'? Is there any deity besides Allah? What is it that compels you to flee from saying 'Allahu Akbar'? Is there anything greater than Allah?" At this, I accepted Islam, and I saw that the blessed face of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lit up with happiness. He said, "Those upon whom Allah's wrath descended are the Jews, and those who went astray are the Christians."

Then people asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for something, so after praising Allah, he said, "Amma ba'd (as for what follows): O people! Gather surplus things." So someone gave a sa', someone half a sa', someone a handful, and someone half a handful. Then he said, "You will meet Allah. At that time, a person will say what I am saying: 'Did I not make you hearing and seeing? Did I not grant you wealth and children? What did you send ahead?' He will look in front of him, behind him, to his right and to his left, but he will find nothing, and he will not be able to save himself from the Fire except through his own self. So save yourselves from the Fire, even if it is with a piece of a date. If you do not find that, then save yourselves by speaking gently. I do not fear poverty for you. Allah will surely help you and will surely grant you wealth, or there will be so many conquests that a woman will travel alone between Hira and Madinah, even though a woman is most at risk of being robbed."

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that I said to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): O Prophet of Allah! We are hunters. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When any one of you shoots an arrow at the game, let him take the name of Allah. If the game dies from that arrow, then eat it. But if it falls into water and dies, then do not eat it, because it is possible that it died because of the water. And if after one or two days you find your arrow in a game and there is no mark of another's arrow on it, then if you wish, eat it. And if a hunting dog is released, then take the name of Allah, and if you find the game dead, then eat it. But if the dog has eaten from it, then do not eat it, because it hunted for itself, not for its master. And if he released his dog and with it there were other dogs with whom the name of Allah was not taken, then do not eat it, because you do not know which of the dogs killed it.

A person says: I said to Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that I have heard a hadith from you, but I want to hear it directly from you. He said: Very well... Then the narrator mentioned the whole hadith and said: Are you not among the "Rakusiyyah" who eat a quarter of the spoils of their people? I said: Why not? The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Although it is not lawful in your religion. Whatever the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said after this, I submitted to it... Then the narrator mentioned the whole hadith.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim Tai (may Allah be pleased with him): I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the game that dies due to the broad side of an arrow. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you kill the game with the sharp edge of the arrow, you may eat it, but if you kill it with the broad side of the arrow, it is considered as mauqooza (an animal that dies due to a blow). Then I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about hunting with a dog. (The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When you send your dog for hunting and mention the name of Allah, you may eat what it catches for you, provided it has not eaten from it itself. For its catching is like slaughtering it. But if you find another dog along with your dog, and you fear that the other dog may have caught and killed the game, then do not eat it, because you mentioned the name of Allah when sending your dog, not the other dog.)

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you send your dog for hunting and take the name of Allah, and you find another dog along with your dog, then do not eat (the game), because you do not know which dog hunted that animal. And when you shoot an arrow at a game, if it passes through (the animal), then eat it; otherwise, do not eat it. And do not eat the game hunted by an arrow that strikes with its broad side, unless you slaughter it. And do not eat the game hunted by a bullet from a gun, unless you slaughter it.

Hadith 19393
It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah, we release our trained dogs for hunting?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Eat of what they catch for you." I asked, "Even if it kills it?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Yes! Provided that other dogs have not joined with it." I asked about the game that dies by the broad side of the arrow, so the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If you kill the game with the sharp edge of the arrow, then you may eat it, but if it is killed by the broad side of the arrow, do not eat it." The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.
