Hadith of Rafi‘ ibn Rifa‘ah (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 18998
حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَمَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي طَارِقُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْقُرَشِيُّ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَافِعُ بْنُ رِفَاعَةَ إِلَى مَجْلِسِ الْأَنْصَارِ ، فَقَالَ : لَقَدْ نَهَانَا نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْيَوْمَ عَنْ شَيْءٍ كَانَ يَرْفُقُ بِنَا فِي مَعَايِشِنَا ، فَقَالَ : نَهَانَا عَنْ كِرَاءِ الْأَرْضِ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَزْرَعْهَا أَوْ لِيُزْرِعْهَا أَخَاهُ أَوْ لِيَدَعْهَا " . وَنَهَانَا عَنْ كَسْبِ الْحَجَّامِ ، وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نُطْعِمَهُ نَوَاضِحَنَا ، وَنَهَانَا عَنْ كَسْبِ الْأَمَةِ إِلَّا مَا عَمِلَتْ بِيَدِهَا ، وَقَالَ هَكَذَا بِأَصَابِعِهِ : نَحْوَ الْخَبْزِ وَالْغَزْلِ وَالنَّفْشِ.
Tariq bin Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Hazrat Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) came to a gathering of the Ansar and said: Today the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us from something which was economically beneficial for us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us from leasing out land and has said that whoever has some land should either cultivate it himself, have his brother cultivate it, or leave it uncultivated. He also forbade earning from cupping and instructed us to feed it to our animals. Likewise, he forbade earning from the prostitution of slave women, except if she works with her own hands, and he indicated with his fingers, for example, baking bread, sewing, or making embroidery.
