It is narrated from Hazrat Harith bin Dhirar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I presented myself in the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invited me to Islam, so I entered Islam and accepted it. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invited me to give zakat, which I accepted, and I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I will return to my people and invite them to accept Islam and to pay zakat. Whoever accepts my invitation, I will collect zakat from him and gather it. Then, at a certain time, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), please send your envoy to me so that I may deliver to you the money I have collected as zakat."
When Hazrat Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) had collected the zakat from those who accepted his invitation, and the appointed time arrived for which he had requested the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to send an envoy, but the envoy did not come, Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that perhaps there was some displeasure from Allah and His Messenger. So he gathered some prominent people of his tribe and told them, "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had fixed a time with me that he would send his envoy in which the zakat I have collected would be delivered to him, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cannot break his promise. I think that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) withholding his envoy may be due to some displeasure from Allah. Therefore, come with me so that we may present ourselves before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Meanwhile, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Walid bin Uqbah to collect the zakat that Harith had gathered. When Walid set out, he became afraid on the way and, due to some unknown fear, returned and made an excuse before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Harith refused to give me zakat and even intended to kill me." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then sent a detachment towards Harith. Meanwhile, Harith was coming with his companions when they encountered the detachment, and the people of the detachment said, "Here is Harith." When they came near, Harith asked, "To whom have you been sent?" They replied, "To you." Harith asked, "Why?" They replied, "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent Walid bin Uqbah to you, and he says that you refused to give him zakat and intended to kill him?" Harith said, "By Him Who sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth, I have never even seen him, nor did he come to me."
Then, when Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) reached the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, "You withheld zakat and intended to kill my envoy?" Harith replied, "By Him Who sent you with the truth, I have never even seen him, nor did he come to me. I only came because the envoy was delayed in reaching me, so I feared that perhaps there was some displeasure from Allah and His Messenger."
At that moment, the verses of Surah Al-Hujurat were revealed: "O you who believe! If a transgressor brings you any news... And He is All-Knowing, All-Wise."
