Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim Tai (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever swears an oath about something and then sees something else as better, he should do that which is better (and offer expiation for his oath).

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim Tai (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the game that dies due to the broad side of an arrow. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you kill the game with the sharp edge of the arrow, you may eat it, but if you kill it with the broad side of the arrow, it is considered as mauqoozah (an animal that dies due to a blow). Then I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about hunting with a dog. (The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When you send your dog for hunting and take the name of Allah, you may eat what it catches for you, provided it has not eaten from it itself. For its catching is like slaughtering it. But if you find another dog along with your dog, and you fear that the other dog may have caught and killed the game, then do not eat it, because you took the name of Allah when sending your dog, not for the other dog.)

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is not a single person among you with whom his Lord will not speak directly without any interpreter. He will look to his right and will see only what he has sent forth; he will look to his left and will see only what he has sent forth; and when he looks in front of him, he will find the Fire of Hell facing him. Therefore, whoever among you can save himself from Hell, even if it be by giving half a date in charity, then let him do so.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man, while delivering a speech in the presence of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: "Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger is successful, and whoever disobeys 'both of them' goes astray." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are a very bad orator. Say: Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger."

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever among you can save himself from Hell, even if it be by giving only a piece of date, then he should do so; and if he does not find even that, then he should speak a good word.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the game that dies from the width of the arrow. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not eat it unless the arrow wounds it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that I once submitted in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! When we hunt, sometimes we do not find a knife, only a sharp stone or the sharp edge of a stick is available, so what should we do? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shed the blood with whatever you wish, taking the name of Allah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "If I release my dog for hunting and upon reaching there I find another dog along with mine, and I do not know which of the two hunted the prey, what should I do?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do not eat it, because when you released your dog, you took the name of Allah, but you did not take it for the other dog." The previous hadith is also narrated through this other chain.

Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from al-Hakam, from al-Sha'bi, from 'Adi ibn Hatim, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, similar to that.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that I presented myself in the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he taught me about Islam and explained to me the manner of prayer, how to perform each prayer at its appointed time. Then he said to me, "O Ibn Hatim! What will your condition be when you will ride from the palaces of Yemen and you will fear none except Allah, until you will reach and settle in the palaces of Hira?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Where will the brave and warlike people of the tribe of Tai go then?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Allah will suffice you against Banu Tai and others." Then I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We hunt with these dogs and hawks, so what is lawful for us from that?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Those dogs which are trained and can wound, and to whom you have taught that knowledge which Allah has taught you, then whatever they hunt for you, you may eat of it, and pronounce the name of Allah upon them." And he said, "If you have trained a dog or a hawk, then you release it taking the name of Allah, whatever it hunts for you, eat it." I asked, "Even if it kills the animal?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Yes! Even if it kills the animal, but it should not eat from it itself, because if it eats from it, then it has hunted for itself (therefore it is not lawful for you)." I asked, "Tell me, if some other dogs join our dog, then what is the ruling?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do not eat from that hunt until you know that your dog alone hunted it." I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We shoot arrows with the broad side, so what is lawful for us from that?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whatever animal you hit with the broad side of the arrow, do not eat it unless you slaughter it before its soul departs."

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that I submitted to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Our area is a hunting region, (please tell me something regarding this)." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "When you release your dog for hunting and take the name of Allah, then whatever game it catches for you and does not eat itself, eat it. But if it has eaten from it, then do not eat it, because it has caught it for itself. And if you find another dog along with your dog, and you fear that the other dog may have caught and killed the game, then do not eat it, because you do not know who hunted it."

A man says that I said to Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that I have heard a hadith attributed to you, but I want to hear it directly from you. He said, "Very well. When I received the news of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings be upon him) proclamation of prophethood, I was greatly displeased. I left my area and reached the border of Rome and went to Caesar. But upon reaching there, I felt even more intense displeasure than I had felt upon hearing the news of prophethood. I thought to myself, I should go and see this man; if he is a liar, he cannot harm me, and if he is truthful, I will find out. So I returned and presented myself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). When I arrived, people began to say, 'Adi bin Hatim, Adi bin Hatim.' I reached the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (may Allah have mercy on him) said to me, 'O Adi! Accept Islam and you will find peace.' He repeated this sentence three times. I said, 'I am already following a religion.' The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'I know your religion better than you.' I said, 'You know my religion better than I do?' The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Yes! Are you not from the "Rakusiyyah" who consume a quarter of the spoils of their people?' I said, 'Why not?' The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Even though this is not lawful in your religion.' What the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said after this, I submitted to it. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'I know what is preventing you from accepting Islam. You think that the followers of this religion are weak and insignificant people whom the Arabs have rejected. Tell me, do you know the city of Hira?' I said, 'I have not seen it, but I have certainly heard of it.' The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'By Him in Whose hand is my soul, Allah will surely complete this religion until a woman will leave Hira and perform the circumambulation of the Ka'bah without any guard, and soon the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz will be conquered.' I asked in amazement, 'Kisra bin Hurmuz?' The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Yes! Kisra bin Hurmuz. And soon so much wealth will be spent that there will be no one left to accept it.' Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) says, 'Indeed, now a woman leaves Hira and performs the circumambulation of the Ka'bah without any guard, and I myself was among those who conquered the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz. And by Him in Whose hand is my soul, the third thing will also surely occur, because the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has foretold it.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that whoever leads us in prayer should perform the bowing and prostration completely, because among us are the weak, the elderly, the sick, travelers, and those in need. And we used to pray in this manner during the blessed era of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi that once I submitted in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! My father used to maintain ties of kinship and do such and such deeds. The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Your father had one objective (fame) which he achieved. I asked: I am asking you about that food which I would only leave in a state of compulsion? The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Do not leave anything in which you appear to resemble Christianity. I asked: If I release my dog for hunting, and it catches the prey, but I do not have anything to slaughter it with, can I slaughter it with a sharp stone or the edge of a stick? The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Shed the blood with whatever you wish and take the name of Allah over it. The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

Husayn narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, and he mentioned it with his chain, except that he said: I heard Murayy ibn Qatariyy al-Ta'i, and he said: "Indeed, your father intended a matter, and he attained it." Simak said: He means the remembrance.

Narrated to us Bahz, narrated to us Hammad ibn Salamah, narrated to us Simak ibn Harb. He mentioned it regarding the place of hunting, and said: "Let the blood flow."

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to him and asked him for one hundred dirhams. He said, "You are asking me for only one hundred dirhams while I am the son of Hatim Tai. By Allah, I will not give you anything." Then he said, "I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever swears an oath about something and then sees something better, let him do that which is better (and offer expiation for his oath)."

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we release our trained dogs on the hunt?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Eat of what they catch for you." I asked, "Even if it kills it?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Yes, provided that no other dogs have joined with it." I asked about the game that dies by the broad side of an arrow, so the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If you kill the game with the sharp edge of your arrow, then you may eat it, but if you kill it with the broad side of the arrow, do not eat it."

Yunus narrated to us, Hammad—meaning Ibn Zayd—narrated to us, Ayyub informed us, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Abu Ubaydah ibn Hudhayfah, from a man, who said: I used to ask people about the hadith of Adi ibn Hatim, while he was beside me and I did not ask him about it. So I went to him and asked him, and he said: Yes, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was sent when he was sent, and he mentioned the hadith...

Muhammad ibn Abi Adi narrated to us, from Ibn Awn, from Muhammad, from Ibn Hudhayfah, who said: I used to narrate a hadith from Adi ibn Hatim. He said: So I said, "This is Adi ibn Hatim in the vicinity of Kufa, so why don't I go to him and be the one who hears it from him directly?" So I went to him and said, "I used to narrate a hadith from you, and I wanted to be the one who hears it from you." He said: When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was sent, I fled until I was in the farthest part of the Romans. Then he mentioned the hadith.

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that I submitted to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away in aversion as if he were seeing Hell. This happened two or three times. Then he said: "Save yourselves from the fire of Hell, even if it be by giving only a piece of a date. And if that is not available, then speak a good word."

It is narrated from Hazrat Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Save yourselves from the fire of Hell, even if it be by giving only a piece of a date."
