Musnad Ahmad

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says that once Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Abu Abdur Rahmid, whose name was Muhammad. A man was saying to him, "O Muhammad! May Allah do such and such to you," and began to abuse him. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "O son of Zaid! Come to me. I see that because of your name, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is being insulted. From today, as long as you live, you will not be called Muhammad." Thus, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) named him Abdur Rahman. Then he summoned the Banu Talha so that they could change the names of their family members. They were seven people, the eldest and their leader being Muhammad. Muhammad bin Talha said, "O Commander of the Faithful! I swear that this name was given to me by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Then go, for the name he has given, I cannot change."
