It is narrated from Hazrat Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that (before accepting Islam) when we returned from the Battle of the Trench, I gathered some people of the Quraysh who were aware of my status and listened to me, and I said to them, "You know, Muhammad (peace be upon him) is increasingly prevailing in many matters in a way that is undesirable to us. I have an opinion; advise me about it." They asked, "What is your opinion?" Amr said, "My opinion is that we should go to Najashi and stay there. If Muhammad (peace be upon him) prevails over his people, we will be with Najashi, and being under his rule is better for us than being under Muhammad (peace be upon him). And if our people prevail, we are known to them, so we can expect good from them." They said, "This is a very good opinion." I said to them, "Then gather something to present as a gift to Najashi." At that time, the best gift in our region was leather, so we collected a lot of leather and set out.

When we arrived there and were still with him, Hazrat Amr bin Umayyah Damri (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Najashi, whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) had sent to Najashi regarding Hazrat Ja'far and his companions. When he left, I said to my companions, "This is Amr bin Umayyah Damri. If I go to Najashi, I will request him to hand Amr over to me. If he does, I will kill him, and the people of Quraysh will see that when I have killed the messenger of Muhammad (peace be upon him), I have avenged them." So I went to Najashi and prostrated to him as I used to do before. Najashi said, "Welcome, my friend. Have you brought any gift for me from your region?" I said, "Yes, Your Majesty! I have brought a lot of leather as a gift for you." Saying this, I presented the leather to him, and he liked it very much. Then I said to him, "Your Majesty! I just saw a man leaving your presence who is a messenger of one of our enemies. Hand him over to me so that I may kill him, for he has harmed many of our noble and best people." Hearing this, Najashi became enraged and struck his nose so hard with his hand that I thought his nose had broken. At that moment, if the earth had split open, I would have entered it. I said, "Your Majesty! If I had known that this would displease you so much, I would never have made such a request." Najashi said, "Do you ask me for the messenger of the one to whom the Great Trust (Namūs Akbar) comes, the same that came to Moses (peace be upon him), so that you may kill him?" I asked, "Your Majesty! Is it really so?" Najashi said, "Amr! Woe to you, listen to me and follow them. By Allah, they are on the truth, and they will surely prevail over their opponents just as Moses (peace be upon him) prevailed over Pharaoh and his armies." I said, "Will you pledge allegiance to me on their behalf for Islam?" Najashi replied in the affirmative, extended his hand, and I pledged allegiance to him for Islam.

Then I returned to my companions, but my condition and opinion had changed from before. I kept my Islam hidden from my companions, and after a short while, I set out with the intention of presenting myself to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to accept Islam. On the way, I met Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him). This incident was before the conquest of Makkah. He was coming from Makkah. I asked him, "Abu Sulaiman! Where are you headed?" He replied, "By Allah! The matter has become clear; that person is certainly a Prophet, and now I am going to accept Islam. How long will this continue?" I said, "By Allah, I am also coming from Abyssinia to accept Islam." So we both presented ourselves to the Prophet (peace be upon him). First, Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward, accepted Islam, and pledged allegiance. Then I stepped forward and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I pledge allegiance to you on the condition that you forgive my past mistakes; I do not mention the sins that come after." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Amr! Pledge allegiance, for Islam wipes out previous sins, and likewise, migration also erases previous sins." So I pledged allegiance and returned. Ibn Ishaq...

Muhammad bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when Hazrat Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, Amr bin Hazm (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Hazrat Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him that Hazrat Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) had been martyred, and that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had said that Ammar would be killed by a rebellious group? Upon hearing this, Hazrat Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) recited "Inna lillah" in distress, stood up anxiously, and went to Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "What has happened to you?" He replied that Hazrat Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) had been martyred. Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) has indeed been martyred, but what is the reason for your condition?" He said, "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say that Ammar would be killed by a rebellious group." Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "You would have fallen in your own urine! Did we kill him? He was killed by Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions; they brought him and threw him among our spears."

Ja'far bin Mutlib, who was among the group of Hazrat Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him), invited a Bedouin to eat. This incident took place on the eleventh of Dhul-Hijjah. The Bedouin replied that he was fasting. Ja'far told him that once, on this same day, Hazrat Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) had also invited a man to eat, and he had given the same reply, that he was fasting. So Hazrat Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden fasting on this day.

When the time of death approached for Hazrat Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him), he was overcome with weeping. His son, Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), asked him, "Why are you crying? Do you feel apprehension about death?" He replied, "By Allah! Not from death, but from the matters that will occur after death." His son said, "You remained steadfast upon goodness." Then he mentioned the companionship of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the conquests of Syria. Hazrat Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "You have left out the best thing, that is, the testimony of 'There is no god but Allah.' I have had three states, and in each state I know about myself. First, I was a disbeliever and among all people the most severe against the Prophet (peace be upon him). If I had died in that state, Hell would have been obligatory for me. When I pledged allegiance to the Prophet, I was more modest before him than anyone else. For this reason, I never looked at the Prophet (peace be upon him) with full gaze, nor did I ever respond to him in my desires, until he joined Allah the Exalted. If I had died in that time, people would have said, 'Congratulations to Amr, he accepted Islam, he was upon goodness, he died in that state, it is hoped that he will attain Paradise.' Then I became involved in government and other matters. Now I do not know whether this is a cause of punishment or reward for me. But when I die, do not weep over me, do not bring any praiser or fire with the funeral, tie my lower garment tightly because I will be questioned, throw earth over me gently and scatter it all around, for the right side has no more right than the left side. Do not fix any wood or stone on my grave, and when you have finished covering me with the earth, stay at my grave for as long as it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat, so that I may find comfort with you."

Abu Nofal says that at the time of death, a severe anxiety overcame Hazrat Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him). When his son, Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), saw this condition, he asked, "O Abu Abdullah! What is this anxiety? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to keep you close to him and entrusted you with various responsibilities." He replied, "Son! This is indeed true, but shall I tell you something? By Allah! I do not know whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) treated me in this way out of love or for the sake of winning my heart. However, I can testify to this: until he departed from this world, he loved two men—one was Ammar, the son of Sumayyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the other was Abdullah bin Masood, the son of Umm Abd (may Allah be pleased with him)." After narrating this hadith, he placed his hands under his chin and began to say, "O Allah! You commanded us, but we abandoned it; You forbade us, yet we did those things; and nothing can encompass us except Your forgiveness." He continued to repeat these words until he passed away.
