Hadith of Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him)

22 hadith
Hadith 17731
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the pots of the People of the Book. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you do not find any other vessels except those, then wash them and you may cook food in them. Then he asked about the meat of donkeys, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it and also forbade every predatory animal that hunts with its canine teeth.

(peace and blessings be upon him) we are hunters (please tell us the rulings regarding hunting). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you release your dog for hunting and recite Bismillah, then whatever it hunts, you may eat it. I asked: Even if the dog has killed the prey? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, even if it has killed it. I asked: We are archers. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whatever your bow returns to you, you may eat it. I asked: We are travelers, we pass by the Jews, Christians, and Magians, and we do not find any utensils except theirs? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you do not find any utensils except theirs, then wash them with water, then you may eat and drink from them.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) camped at any place with an army, the people would scatter in different ravines and valleys. (Once this happened, so) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said: Your scattering in these ravines and valleys is because of Satan. The narrator says that after this, whenever they camped at any place, the people would stay so close to each other that you could say if a single sheet were spread over them, it would cover them all.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I presented myself in the court of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him) Please write in my name such-and-such land in Syria, upon which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has not yet prevailed.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), “Do you not hear what he is saying?” Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “By Him in Whose hand is my life, you will surely prevail over it.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote a document to that effect and gave it to him. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him) We are hunters (please tell us the rulings regarding hunting).” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “When you send your trained dog for hunting and recite ‘Bismillah’, then whatever it hunts, you may eat it.” I asked, “Even if the dog has killed the prey?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Yes, even if it has killed it. And if it is not trained and you are able to slaughter it, then slaughter it and eat it. Whatever your bow returns to you, you may eat it.” I said, “We live in the area of Jews and Christians; they eat pork and drink wine. How should we use their pots and utensils?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If you do not find any utensils except theirs, then wash them with water, then you may eat and drink in them.” Then I asked, “O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him) What is lawful and what is unlawful for us?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Do not eat domesticated donkeys and any predatory animal that hunts with its fangs.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I participated in the Battle of Khaybar with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The people were hungry, and we came across some domesticated donkeys. We slaughtered them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) found out, he ordered Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), who then announced among the people that for whoever testifies to my Prophethood, the meat of domesticated donkeys is not lawful. We found garlic and onions in the gardens there. Since the people were hungry, they took them out and began to eat. When they came to the mosque, the smell of garlic and onions had spread in the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever eats these foul vegetables should not come near us. The animal obtained through looting is not lawful, nor is any animal hunted by a predator with fangs, nor any animal that has been shot as a target.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I submitted in the court of Prophethood, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), please tell me which things are lawful for me and which things are unlawful?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and looked at me from bottom to top and said, "It is a small piece of news." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), is it news of good or evil?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Of good." Then he said, "Do not eat the meat of domesticated donkeys and do not eat the meat of any predatory animal that hunts with its canine teeth." The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I presented myself in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked at me from bottom to top, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There is a little news." I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Is it good news or bad news?" He said, "It is good news." Then I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we live in a hunting area. I release my trained dog for hunting, sometimes I get the chance to slaughter the animal and sometimes not (before I reach the prey, it has already died). Similarly, when I shoot an arrow, the same happens. What should I do?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Your hand, your bow, and your trained dog—whatever thing comes to you hunted by these, whether you get the chance to slaughter it or not, you may eat it."
