Hadith 974

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا غَسَّانُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْرَائِيلَ ، عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَنَحْنُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ، فَقَالَ : أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ عَنِ الْوَتْرِ ؟ فَمَنْ كَانَ مِنَّا فِي رَكْعَةٍ شَفَعَ إِلَيْهَا أُخْرَى حَتَّى اجْتَمَعْنَا إِلَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " يُوتِرُ فِي أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ ، ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ فِي وَسَطِهِ ، ثُمَّ أَثْبَتَ الْوَتْرَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّاعَةِ " ، قَالَ : وَذَلِكَ عِنْدَ طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ .
Abdu Khair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once we were sitting in the mosque when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said, "Where is the one who asked about Witr?" Whoever among us had prayed one rak'ah quickly joined for the second rak'ah, and we all gathered around Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) initially used to pray Witr in the first part of the night, then he started praying it in the middle part, and then he continued to pray it at the time when dawn was about to break."
