It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the following verse was revealed: «﴿وَلِلّٰهِعَلَىالنَّاسِحِجُّالْبَيْتِمَنِاسْتَطَاعَإِلَيْهِسَبِيلًا﴾ [آل عمران : 97]», the people asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Is performing Hajj every year obligatory?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. After the question was asked three times and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, he said: "No, and if I had said yes, then performing Hajj every year would have become obligatory." And in this context, this verse was revealed: «﴿يَاأَيُّهَاالَّذِينَآمَنُوالَاتَسْأَلُواعَنْأَشْيَاءَإِنْتُبْدَلَكُمْتَسُؤْكُمْ .....﴾ [المائدة : 101]» "O you who believe! Do not ask about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble...... ."
