حَدَّثَنَا عَارِمٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا نُعَيْمُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ : هَلْ يُعَفِّرُ مُحَمَّدٌ وَجْهَهُ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ ؟ قَالَ : فَقِيلَ : نَعَمْ ، فَقَالَ : وَاللَّاتِ وَالْعُزَّى ، يَمِينًا يَحْلِفُ بِهَا ، لَئِنْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ ، لَأَطَأَنَّ عَلَى رَقَبَتِهِ ، أَوْ لَأُعَفِّرَنَّ وَجْهَهُ فِي التُّرَابِ ، قَالَ : فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي ، زَعَمَ لَيَطَأُ عَلَى رَقَبَتِهِ ، قَالَ : فَمَا فَجَأَهُمْ مِنْهُ إِلَّا وَهُوَ يَنْكُصُ عَلَى عَقِبَيْهِ وَيَتَّقِي بِيَدَيْهِ ، قَال : فقَالُوا : لَهُ مَا لَكَ ؟ قَالَ : إِنَّ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ لَخَنْدَقًا مِنْ نَارٍ وَهَؤُلَاءِ أَجْنِحَةٌ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم : " لَوْ دَنَا مِنِّي لَخَطَفَتْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ عُضْوًا عُضْوًا " ، قَالَ : فَأُنْزِلَ لَا أَدْرِي فِي حَدِيثِ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَوْ شَيْءٍ بَلَغَه إِنَّ الإِنْسَانَ لَيَطْغَى أَنْ رَآهُ اسْتَغْنَى إِنَّ إِلَى رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَى أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَى عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّى أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَى أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَى أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّى يَعْنِي أَبَا جَهْلٍ أَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَى كَلَّا لَئِنْ لَمْ يَنْتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ نَاصِيَةٍ كَاذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُ قَالَ : يَدْعُو قَوْمَهُ سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ قَالَ : يَعْنِي الْمَلَائِكَةَ كَلَّا لا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِبْ سورة العلق آية 6 - 19 .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Abu Jahl said to the chiefs of the Quraysh, "Does Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) place his face on the ground in your presence?" They said, "Yes." Upon this, he said, "By Lat and Uzza, if I see him doing so, I will trample his neck under my foot and rub his face in the dust." Saying this, he came towards the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was praying. He advanced to place his impure foot on the neck of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but suddenly he turned back and started running away, shielding himself with his hands from something. The chiefs of the Quraysh asked him, "What happened?" He said, "A trench of fire came between me and him, and various hands started reaching out towards me." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If he had come near me, the angels would have snatched away one of his limbs." And on this occasion, the last verses of Surah Al-‘Alaq were revealed: "Indeed, man transgresses..." to the end.
