Abu Al-Gharif says that once water for ablution was brought to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he rinsed his mouth three times and put water into his nose, washed his face three times, washed his hands and elbows three times, wiped his head, and washed his feet, then said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing ablution in this manner. Then he recited a portion of the Noble Qur'an and said: This is for the one who is not in a state of major impurity; for the one who is in a state of major impurity, this is not allowed, nor can he recite even a single verse.
