Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once we had a doubt regarding a surah of the Noble Qur'an; some said its verses were thirty-five and others said thirty-six. When this discussion increased, we went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to have the matter decided. When we arrived, we found Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) whispering to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We clarified the purpose of our visit and explained that we had differed regarding the recitation of a surah. Upon hearing this, the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned red. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "Recite the Noble Qur'an in the manner you have been taught."
