Once, Sayyidina Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the death of Abu Talib. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and hide him in a pit, and do not do any other work before coming to me." So when I had placed him in a pit and returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said to me: "Go and perform ghusl (ritual bath), and do not do any other work before coming to me." So I performed ghusl and presented myself in the court of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me so many supplications that I would not have been as happy to receive red or black camels in exchange. The narrator says that after this, whenever Sayyidina Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) gave ghusl to a deceased person, he would also perform ghusl himself.
