Hadith 737

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنَّ بَاطِنَ الْقَدَمَيْنِ أَحَقُّ بِالْمَسْحِ مِنْ ظَاهِرِهِمَا ، حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَمْسَحُ ظَاهِرَهُمَا " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My opinion was that for «مسح على الخفين», the part of the socks that touches the ground is more appropriate (to wipe over) than the part that remains on top of the foot, until I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the upper part.
