It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Allah granted victory over Makkah at the blessed hand of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon. After praising and glorifying Allah, he said: Allah kept the elephants away from Makkah and granted authority over it to His Messenger and the believers. For me, fighting in it was made lawful for a part of the day, after which it is forbidden until the Day of Resurrection. Its trees are not to be cut, its game is not to be frightened, and picking up a lost item from here is not lawful for anyone except for the one who announces it. And if someone’s relative is killed, he has the choice of two things, whichever he considers better for himself: either to take blood money or to kill the murderer in retaliation.

Upon hearing this sermon, a man from Yemen stood up whose name was Abu Shah and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Please write this sermon for me.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to write this sermon and give it to Abu Shah. Meanwhile, Hazrat Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) also stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Please make an exception for the Idhkhir grass, as we use it in our graves and houses.” So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made it an exception.

The narrator says: I asked Imam Awza’i (may Allah have mercy on him), “What is meant by ‘write and give it to Abu Shah’? What would they write for him?” He replied: The meaning of this sentence is that they should write for Abu Shah the sermon which he had heard. Also, Abdullah, the son of Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him), says: There is no hadith more authentic than this regarding the permission to write hadith, because the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself ordered the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to write that sermon.
