It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led one of the two night prayers (the name of which Hazrat Abu Hurairah mentioned, but the narrator Muhammad forgot; most likely Maghrib or Isha), and after leading two rak‘ahs, he ended the prayer with salam and came to the pillar in the mosque which was broad in width, and gestured with his hand as if he was angry. The hasty people began to leave the mosque and started saying that the rak‘ahs of the prayer had been reduced. At that time, Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) were also among the people, but they felt awe in speaking to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter. Among those people was another man whose hands were somewhat longer, and because of this he was called Dhu’l-Yadayn. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Did you forget or have the rak‘ahs of the prayer been reduced? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have neither forgotten nor have the rak‘ahs of the prayer been reduced. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the companions: Is it as Dhu’l-Yadayn is saying? The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) affirmed it. Upon this, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned and performed the rak‘ahs that had been missed, and after saying salam, he said Allahu Akbar and performed a prostration like that of prayer or a little longer. Then he raised his head and said takbir (and sat), then again said takbir and performed a second prostration, which was like the first or a little longer. Then after raising his head from the prostration (he said takbir). When the narrator named Muhammad was asked whether the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then said salam, he would say that he was informed that Hazrat Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) said that then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said salam.
