It is narrated from Urwah bin Zubair, may Allah have mercy on him, that once I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, "Tell me about any severe incident that the polytheists inflicted upon the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: One day, the chiefs of Quraysh were gathered in Hatim and I was also present there. They began to discuss the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "We have never shown as much patience towards anyone as we have towards this man. He has called our wise men fools, spoken ill of our forefathers, found faults in our religion, scattered our community, and spoken badly about our gods. We have been very patient with him." Meanwhile, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advanced, touched the Black Stone, and while circumambulating the Ka'bah, passed by them. During this, they began to point at each other, finding fault in some of the words of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I noticed the effects of this on the blessed face of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This happened for three circuits. Finally, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O group of Quraysh, do you hear? By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I have come to you with sacrifice." The people felt great shame at this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and there was not a single man among them who did not feel as if a bird was sitting on his head. Even the man who was previously the harshest began to speak kindly, saying, "Abul Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him), please go in safety and well-being. By Allah, you are not ignorant." So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went back.
The next day, those people again gathered in Hatim and I was with them. They began to say to each other, "Earlier, you mentioned the trying things you have endured from him, and when he appeared before you with what you disliked, you let him go." While they were talking, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived. They all jumped up together and surrounded the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying, "Are you the one who says such and such?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes! I am the one who says that." The narrator says: I saw one of them grab the cloak of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by the neck (and began to strangle him). Seeing this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up to rescue the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), weeping and saying, "Will you kill a man just because he says, 'My Lord is Allah'?" Upon this, they left. This was the hardest day in which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) suffered such severe harm from the Quraysh.
