Musnad Ahmad

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) once said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! After this verse, what goodness remains «لَّيْسَ بِأَمَانِيِّكُمْ وَلَا أَمَانِيِّ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ مَن يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا يُجْزَ بِهِ» that 'Neither your desires nor the desires of the People of the Book are of any account; whoever does evil will be recompensed for it...'? So will we be punished for every bad deed?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abu Bakr! May Allah have mercy on you, do you not fall ill? Do you not face distress? Do you not become sad? Do you not suffer pain and hardship?" He replied, "Why not!" The Prophet said: "That is the recompense."
