It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abu Ruh, whose real name was Zanba‘, found his slave with a slave-girl. He cut off the slave’s nose and castrated him. The slave came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked him, “Who did this to you?” He mentioned the name of Zanba‘. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) summoned him and asked, “Why did you do this?” He narrated the whole incident. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the slave: “Go, you are free.” He said, “O Messenger of Allah! Who has freed me?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “You are freed by Allah and His Messenger.” And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also advised the Muslims regarding him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away, the slave came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) advice. He said: “Yes, I remember. We will provide for you and your family.” Thus, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) arranged for his sustenance. Then, when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away and Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) became the caliph, he came again and mentioned the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) advice. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also said: “Yes, I remember. Where do you want to go?” He mentioned Egypt. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to the governor of Egypt instructing him to give him enough land so that he could eat and drink from it.
