Hadith 67

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I have been commanded to fight the people until they say «لا اله الا الله», but when they say this statement, they have protected their lives and wealth from me, except for a right that is due from them, and their reckoning is with Allah. When the trial of apostasy arose, Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him): How can you fight these people when you have also heard this hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? He replied: By Allah! I will not differentiate between prayer and zakat, and whoever differentiates between the two, I will surely fight him. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We also joined him in that fight, and then we realized that guidance and righteousness were in that.
