(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنًَا حَدَّثَنًَا
عبْد ُالصَّمَد ، ِحَدَّثَنَا
حَمَّادٌ ، عَن
ْعَطَاء ِبْن السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ
أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ
عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : سَامٌ عَلَيْكَ ! ثُمَّ يَقُولُونَ فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَوْلا يُعَذِّبُنَا اللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُ سورة المجادلة آية 8 فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَة وَإِذَا جَاءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللَّهُ سورة المجادلة آية 8 إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, that Jews used to come to the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and say "Sam Alaik" (death be upon you). Then they would say in their hearts: Why does Allah not punish us for what we say? Upon this, the following verse was revealed: When they come to you, they greet you in a manner in which Allah has not greeted you.
