It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most beloved way of fasting to Allah is the way of Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him), and likewise, his prayer is the most beloved to Allah. He would sleep for half the night, stand (in prayer) for a third of the night, and then rest for a sixth of the night. Similarly, he would fast one day and leave (not fast) the next day."
