Laith (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I was present in the service of Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) at a time when he was reclining against a cushion on which there were pictures of some birds and wild animals. I asked, "Is this not disliked?" He replied, "No, the disliked pictures are those which are set up, and regarding them my father narrated this hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): Whoever makes pictures will be subjected to punishment. The narrator Hafs once said that he will be commanded to blow a soul into it, but he will not be able to blow a soul into it."
