Hadith 622

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out an army and appointed an Ansari as their commander. When they set out, that Ansari became angry with them over something and said to them, "Gather firewood." After that, he had a fire lit in the wood and said, "I make you swear that you must enter this fire." The people were just considering jumping into it when a young man said, "It was from this very fire that you fled and sought refuge with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Do not be hasty; first go and ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If he commands you to jump into it, then certainly do so." So the people stopped and, upon returning, told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the whole incident. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If you had entered it once, you would never have come out of it. Remember! Obedience is only in matters of goodness."
