Hadith 6176

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَخِي ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ ، أَخْبَرَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى ، فَإِذَا خَشِيتَ الصُّبْحَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah! How should the night prayer be performed?" He replied: "You should pray in sets of two rak'ahs, and when you fear that morning is near, then add one rak'ah as witr to those two."
