Muhammad bin Amr, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once we were sitting in the market with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, and on one side of him Salamah bin Azraq was also sitting. Meanwhile, a funeral passed by, behind which the sounds of weeping were coming. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: If these people stop crying and wailing, it would be better for their deceased. Salamah bin Azraq said: Abu Abdur Rahman! Are you saying this? He replied: Yes! I am the one saying this, because once someone from the family of Marwan died, and the women gathered and started weeping over him. Marwan said: Abdul Malik! Go and stop these women from weeping. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, was present there. I myself heard him saying: Leave them, for once, when someone from the family of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away, the women gathered and started weeping. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up and began to scold and stop them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O Ibn Khattab! Leave them, for the eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, and the wound is still fresh." He asked: Did you yourself hear this narration from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him? He replied: Yes! Salamah asked: Does Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrate this from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him? He replied: Yes! Upon this, he said: Allah and His Messenger know best.
