Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) never used to abandon Hajj and Umrah. Once, his son Abdullah came to him and said, “I fear that there will be fighting and killing among the people this year. Would it not be better if you stayed back this year and did not go for Hajj?” Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied, “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also set out for Hajj, and the disbelievers of Quraysh came between him and the Sacred Sanctuary. So, if any obstacle comes before me as well, I will do what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did.” Then he recited this verse: “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example.” And he said, “I make you a witness that I have made the intention for Umrah.” After that, he set out, and when he reached the place of Bayda’, he said, “The matter of Hajj and Umrah is the same. I make you a witness that I have now made the intention for Hajj along with my Umrah.” Thus, he reached Makkah and performed a single Tawaf for both.
