Hadith 5032

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، أَخْبَرَنِي عُقْبَةُ ، سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى ، فَإِنْ خَشِيتَ الصُّبْحَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِرَكْعَةٍ " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : مَا مَثْنَى مَثْنَى ؟ قَالَ : رَكْعَتَانِ رَكْعَتَانِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The night prayer is offered in sets of two rak‘ahs. When the time of dawn approaches, then add one rak‘ah to them and perform Witr."
