Yazid bin Moheb narrates that Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) offered Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) the position of judge. He replied, "I will neither judge between two people nor will I lead (as an imam). Have you not heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever seeks refuge with Allah is granted complete protection'?" He (Uthman) said, "Why not!" Upon this, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "Then I seek refuge with Allah from you appointing me to any position." So Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) left him and said, "Do not tell anyone about this."
