It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer voluntary prayers on his mount while coming from Makkah Mukarramah to Madinah Munawwarah, regardless of which direction it was facing. And regarding this, the following verse was revealed: "Wherever you turn your face, there is the presence of Allah."
