Hadith 4713

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَأَى حُلَّةَ سِيَرَاءَ ، أَوْ حَرِيرٍ تُبَاعُ ، فَقَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لَوْ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ تَلْبَسُهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَوْ لِلْوُفُودِ ؟ قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ " ، قَالَ : فَأُهْدِيَ إليَّ ِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا بِحُلَّةٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مِنْكَ تَقُولُ مَا قُلْتَ وَبَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ بِهَا ؟ قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَبِيعَهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوَهَا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a silk garment being sold, so he said to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "If you were to buy it, you could wear it on Fridays or when delegations come to you?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is worn by the one who has no share in the Hereafter." A few days later, some silk garments came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from somewhere, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent one of those garments to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "You yourself said about this what I heard, and now you have sent me this silk garment?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have sent it to you so that you may sell it and use its price for yourself, or make someone else wear it."
