Hadith 4680

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the chief of the hypocrites, Abdullah bin Ubayy, died, his son—who was a sincere Muslim—came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Please give me your shirt so that I may shroud him in it, and lead his funeral prayer, and also seek forgiveness from Allah for him." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him his shirt and said, "Inform me at the time of the funeral." When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stepped forward to lead the prayer, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted, "Allah has forbidden you from leading the funeral prayer of the hypocrites." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I have been given a choice regarding two matters: to seek forgiveness or not to seek forgiveness." Thus, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led his funeral prayer. Later, Allah the Exalted revealed the command that for any of them who dies, never perform their funeral prayer. Thus, after that, their funeral prayer was abandoned.
