(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا كَهْمَسٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُصْعَبُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ بن عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عُثْمَانُ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى مِنْبَرِهِ : إِنِّي مُحَدِّثُكُمْ حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، لَمْ يَكُنْ يَمْنَعُنِي أَنْ أُحَدِّثَكُمْ بِهِ إِلَّا الضِّنُّ بِكُمْ ، إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " حَرَسُ لَيْلَةٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، أَفْضَلُ مِنْ أَلْفِ لَيْلَةٍ يُقَامُ لَيْلُهَا ، وَيُصَامُ نَهَارُهَا " .
On one occasion, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon from the pulpit and said: I am narrating to you a hadith which I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); it is not out of miserliness that I would refrain from conveying it to you. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Guarding for one night in the path of Allah is superior to standing in prayer and fasting during the day for a thousand nights.
