It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Uhud, the women were behind the Muslims and were tending to the wounded among the polytheists. If I swear by Allah, my oath will be true (and I will not be lying) that on that day, none of us desired the world, until Allah revealed this verse: «﴿مِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا وَمِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ﴾» [آل عمران : 152] “Some of you desire the world and some of you desire the Hereafter, then Allah turned you away from them so that He may test you.” When the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disobeyed the Prophet’s command and did not comply, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was left alone among only nine individuals, seven of whom were Ansar and two were from Quraysh, and the tenth was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself. When the polytheists attacked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: “May Allah have mercy on the one who repels them from us.” Upon hearing this, an Ansari advanced, fought for a while, and was martyred. In this way, one by one, all seven Ansari companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were martyred. Seeing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “We have not done justice to our companions.” Shortly after, Abu Sufyan came (who had not yet accepted Islam) and began to chant the slogan of victory for Hubal. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Respond to him: Allah is Most High and Most Great.” Abu Sufyan said: “We have ‘Uzza, and you have no ‘Uzza.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Respond to him: Allah is our Protector and you have no protector.” Then Abu Sufyan said: “Today is in retaliation for the day of Badr; a day for us and a day against us; a day we suffered and a day we rejoiced; Hanzalah for Hanzalah, so-and-so for so-and-so, and so-and-so for so-and-so.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There is still no equality between us and you; our slain are alive and provided for, while your slain are punished in the Fire of Hell.” Then Abu Sufyan said: “Some of the bodies have been mutilated; this was not the work of our leaders. I neither ordered it nor forbade it, I neither like it nor dislike it, I was neither pleased nor displeased by it.” When the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) saw, they found that the belly of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) had been ripped open, and Abu Sufyan’s wife Hind had taken out his liver and chewed it, but could not eat it. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his body, he asked: “Did she eat any of it?” The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: “No.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah does not want any part of Hamza’s body to enter the Fire.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his body in front and offered his funeral prayer. Then the body of an Ansari was brought and placed beside Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered his funeral prayer as well. Then the Ansari’s body was taken away and Sayyiduna Hamza’s body was left there. Then another body was brought and placed beside Sayyiduna Amir Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered his funeral prayer for him as well. Then his body was taken away and Sayyiduna Hamza’s body was left there. In this way, on that day, the funeral prayer for Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) was offered seventy times.
