Hadith 4246

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that I reached Abu Jahl during the Battle of Badr, and he was lying wounded, his leg had been cut off, and he was fending people off with his sword. I said to him: "All praise is due to Allah, O enemy of Allah! He has disgraced you." He replied, "Has any man ever been killed by his own people?" I began to strike him with my sword, which was blunt; it struck his hand and his sword fell. I picked up his sword and struck him with it until I killed him. Then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "Abu Jahl has been killed." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Swear by Allah, besides whom there is no deity." I swore, and this happened three times. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked with me to where he was lying, stood over him, and said, "All praise is due to Allah, O enemy of Allah! He has disgraced you. He was the Pharaoh of this Ummah." And in another chain of narration, this addition is also transmitted: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me his sword as a reward.
