A student of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) — who was from Hamdan — says: When Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to travel to Madinah Munawwarah, he gathered his students and said: I hope that the wealth of religion, knowledge of the Qur'an, and jurisprudence that you possess is not possessed by anyone among the Muslim armies. This Qur'an was revealed in several modes (multiple recitations). By Allah! Sometimes two men would argue so intensely about this matter as people can argue about anything. One reciter would say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me to recite it this way, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would approve of it, and when the other would say so, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say, "Both of you are correct." In this way, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us. Truth leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. Lying leads to sin, and sin leads to Hell. You can judge from this that some of you say about your companion: "He lied and sinned," and when someone speaks the truth, you say, "You spoke the truth and did a good deed." This Qur'an will neither change nor become old, nor will anyone become bored of it by reciting it repeatedly. Whoever recites it according to one recitation should not abandon the other recitations out of disinterest, because whoever denies any verse of it, it is as if he denies the entire Qur'an. And it is just as if one of you says to his companion, "Hurry up, come here." By Allah! If I knew that anyone knew more of the Qur'an revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) than I do, I would have learned from him so that his knowledge would be added to mine. Soon there will come people who will neglect the prayer, so you should perform the prayer on time and also include voluntary prayers with it. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to review the Qur'an every year in Ramadan, but in the year the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, I recited the Qur'an to him twice, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved of me. And I memorized seventy surahs by listening from the blessed mouth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
