Hadith 3842

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, the Ansar said: "One leader will be from among us and one leader will be from among you." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to them and said: "O group of Ansar! Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), during his blessed life, himself commanded Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer? Who among you can willingly put himself ahead of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)?" Upon this, the Ansar said: "We seek refuge with Allah from putting ourselves ahead of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)."
