It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his companions (may Allah be pleased with them): "No person should come to me with news about any of my companions, because I wish that when I come to you, my heart is completely clean towards each one of you." Once, some wealth came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from somewhere, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed it. I passed by two men, and one of them said to the other, "By Allah! This distribution is such that neither Allah's pleasure nor the home of the Hereafter is intended by it." I listened carefully to what they said and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You have said, 'No person should come to me with news about any of my companions.' Just now, I passed by such and such men, and they were saying this." Upon this, the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned red, then he said: "May Allah's mercy descend upon Musa; he was troubled even more than this, but he remained patient."
